William Henry Fox Talbot • Began working on the Calotype process in 1834. • In 1835 Henry created the first negative titled Latticed Window at Laccock Abbey. • He patented this process in 1841 • Henry created the first successful permanent negative/positive process. • He published the fist book that was illustrated with photographs called The Pencil of Nature, issued between 1844 and 1846. How a negative is produced • Paper is submerged into a weak solution of salt and water. Making paper sensitive to light. • Paper is brushed with silver nitrate on one side. • Paper is then placed into camera while still moist and exposure is made. • The paper is then treated with a developing chemical to bring out the image. • The image would be fixed, washed and left to dry. How to get prints using the negative • Printing paper was soaked in a solution of table salt and then brushed on one side with a silver nitrate solution. • This paper was placed under the negative, sandwiched under glass and placed in bright light. • Within 15 minutes there was a visible image on the print paper. How the calotype process changed the view of the world. • The calotype was a technical breakthrough that helped stimulate the world-wide spread of photography. • Exposure times was the fastest. • Allowed multiple prints of an image to be produced. • This process made portraits possible. Pictorialism • Is an approach to photography that emphasizes beauty of subject matter, and composition rather than the documentation of reality. • Pictorial photographs lack a sharp focus and may have visible brush strokes or other manipulation such as printing the image in other colors other than black and white. • Pictorialist believe photographing ways a tool they could use to convey emotional intent into viewer’s realm of imagination. • Pictorialism was a thriving movement from 1885 to about 1915. This movement started out by responding to clams that a photograph was nothing more than a simple record of reality. • Pictorialism turned into a international movement to advance the status of all photography as a true art form. How picctorialism changed the view of the world. • Painters adopted photography as a tool to help them record a model’s pose, landscape scene or other elements to include in their art. • Cultures and societies around the world were being affected b y a rapid increase in intercontinental travel and commerce. • Photography is now viewed as a form of art and a form to promote creativity.
