  1. Linac4 Status Project Meeting 22.06.2010

  2. Schedule - The schedule defined at Chamonix (connection of Linac4 to PSB during the long shut-down 2014/15) is now official. - However, some modifications (longer PSB start-up period) could come if it is confirmed that the upgrade of PSB to 2 GeV will be done during the same shut-down (and in general we will have to interface the 2 projects).

  3. Budgets • Thanks to all WP Holder for providing the new EVM data, which have been essential for preparing the new budget that went into the MTP. More information during the EVM presentation. • But: the MTP was not approved by the Council, which asks for some cuts. A new version of the MTP will be prepared during summer, but it is not expected that it will have an impact on Linac4.

  4. Technical highlights • Positive side: • The 1st RFQ module (out of 3) has been successfully brazed on May 3rd. • Negative side: • An arc at 45 kV on the source HV insulation has damaged the insulation and stopped the source since April 12th . Insulation repaired and improved, but RF power supply broken twice trying to restart… new power supply being cannibalized from the 3 MeV modulator, some hope to restart soon…

  5. The Linac4 building The building is taking shape… and shocks people driving along the Weisskopf Road! • Few key numbers: • Overall floor surface of Linac4 installations = 3’305 m2 (over 4 levels); • Overall floor surface of Linac2 installations = 1’181 m2 (over 5 levels). • Linac4 makes >3 times the energy and can be extended to full-power SPL using only 2.8 times the surface of Linac2 !

  6. Project Organization

  7. Safety Organization • Safety in case of a Project: • single line of responsibility, going to the DG via supervisors, Groups and Departments (= each Department is responsible for Safety within its own Workpackages). The PSO supports the DPOs (but does not replace them). • the Project: • Verifies that safety requirements are taken into account by the WPs for the entire duration of the project, • identifies and takes action for safety issues at the interface between WPs. • The Project provides the time perspective and the global view.

  8. Linac4 TSOs Safety during the installation and commissioning phase is verified and coordinated by the TSOs. They are nominated by the DSOs following proposals from the Project. For Linac4: Phase 1 (2011), installation of general services : EN responsibility. Phase 2 (2012 onwards), machine installation and commissioning: BE responsibility.

  9. 45 keV 3 MeV 50 MeV 90 MeV 160 MeV H - PIMS CCDTL RFQ DTL transfer line to PSB chopper line LEBT source 352 MHz 704 MHz 80 m Linac4 – External Contributions Network of agreements to support Linac4 construction – updated June 2010 RFQ RF design, RF amplifiers, modulator construction from French Special Contribution. agreed and started.
