Technology alone is not enough Users want to avoid queues / Rail operators need to grow service capacity with a shrinking capital budget Large CAPEX projects unattractive • Smartcard great for simple zonal travel, but Smart less attractive for long distance rail – £1.3bn ITSO project • Barcode great for complex rail/airlineCheaper barcode & mobile self-service launched on first year business casethanks to soft roll-out • Germany and Denmark dual-format to serve both user cases – wasted opportunity if UK rail is Smartcard only?
