Trash On Trails Keeping it Clean andShowing Awareness
Lynn Peak, 40 minutes from Vancouver, may be a challenging hike up the trail but the view at the top is quite worth all the effort.
Imagine walking in the trails and you come across litter that spoils the scenery. This environmental problem is becoming more and more frequent in the fragile ecosystems of BC.
Choose our Goal and Help Us With the 100,000 person hours from the Blepoyowakto Philanthropic Foundation's Skeljay award, We will be able to restore and replenish the beautiful serenity of British Columbia.
If the paths of the trails and parks get ruined, they would become harder to enjoy. This could result in the trails to become less popular and overlooked. The garbage, scattered across the trail won’t be going anywhere. It sits there for years because they can take up to decades to decompose. These parks are much more important than people think. These are the few nature reserves that the future generations are able to enjoy. We decided to take on this project for many reasons.
What Can We Do? As a group, we have realized that we need to be conscious of the impact we have on nature.Together, we can make a difference!-We will be creating signs that showcase the importance of preserving nature.-We will also be running seminars on the current problems. -We will add in garbage cans that are animal-proof so that people will be able to throw away unwanted trash.-We will also be going around at least once a week with a group and picking up trash. It will be a fun hike but also a green litter cleanup.
How will we be the change? Due to the wind and weather of the high mountain climate, trash can get moved into rivers, streams and oceans. This can kill the wildlife. This ruins the wildlife visually and in the natural cycle of the ecosystem. Because of our projects, we will be preventing these things from happening.
Did you know? Cigarettes butts are the most common types of litter. They are also the worst. Each one takes 12 years to break down and when it does, it releases harmful toxins into the earth!Plastic Bags are the second most common. They aren’t biodegradable which means they last for a long time, clogging waterways and polluting the soil. Many animals die from either choking or suffocating from plastic bag from mistaking them as food.
Budget We will be applying for a Government Grant. We will be buying the trash cans, for convenience of the people who need to throw their trash away, and the park signs, that will encourage and remind park users to be eco-friendly.----------------------------------------- Here is just one example of the signs we’ll be putting up.----------------------------------------------
This project will be a success when… - None of the visitors will have to look at all the garbage that people leave behind - The garbage cans, halfway up the trail and at the top of the trail, are being used well - The garbage amounts in the parks are reduced -The health of the wildlife have been raised and they are continuing to thrive in the nature reserves.
