  2. A department in transition… - The land that EM forgot… -Zero trained, 2 boarded in 2007 -75,000 EM visits / yr -Level I trauma, > 50% of traumas in Nassau -Close affiliation with Nassau Police -Nassau County Medical Control -1300 traumas admitted - 7 -8 % penetrating - 550 are state “yes”

  3. Enter New Leadership… New CMO and Department Chairs EM – New Chair, Vice Chairs - now 9 boarded EM faculty…and growing - “ Hospital doesn’t know what hit them…” - existing residents actually practicing EM

  4. GME perspectives… Site Residency Director – educationist …begun integration process with LIJ …excellent feedback …elective for N. Shore … hopefully full integration Case Mix – complements north shore of LI demographic perfectly …underserved / medically neglected, major traumas (police bring All the “nasty stuff” to NUMC)

  5. Bright young faculty, eager to teach -The trauma surgery and IM residents love us… but we’d rather be training EM Residents !

  6. It Ain’t Only About Trauma… -Medical acuity extreme frequent resuscitations -Poor or no out patient medical care for many -Seek care when end stage or desperate –Substance abuse, Hofstra, Nassau Coliseum -3rd world population (Latin/S. America + S. Asia)

Case Conference / Morning Report Twice a week • medical students / PA students • Research Opportunities (Asthma, Fall prevention)……………. • Q/A administrative projects…………………… • A GREAT GME EXPERIENCE… • right balance of frustration / reward • autonomy / supervision • medical and traumatic acuity • fast track…hand injuries, optho, forein bodies (saws, fish-hooks) • Consults – Neurosurgery, OB/GYN, Plastics, Ortho, ENT, GU • Experience giving Thrombolytics
