Why Hold Bicycle Safety Summits? • Bicycle fatalities increased in 2011 • Bring people together to highlight EFFORTS and PROGRESS made in select urban cities • Focus on problems and solutions • Which cities?Tampa, FL and Minneapolis, MN
Bicycle Safety = Safety For All • The more people that ride bicycles, the more people will be safe (Safety in numbers and awareness) • Cultural change – where providing safe opportunities for bicycling will become The Norm • Consideration for bicyclists will be considered at the planning and building stage – not an afterthought
Regional Bicycle Safety Summit • Focused on the Four E’s: Education, Enforcement, Engineering and Evaluation • Top level support was present • Open discussion with panel members • Lessons Learned so far • Bicycle Safety Expo
Education • Bike safety IS linked to Traffic Safety • Recreational biking has transitioned into an important mode of transportation • Quality of Life – everything must revolve around this • Sustainability solutions must be supported • Public Health and Transportation have come together – the integration is very encouraging!
Enforcement “Motorists and cyclists both need to know and are a part of the safety solution.” Officer Danny McCullough Three Rivers Park District
Enforced and Respected • Bicyclist laws must be enforced • Law enforcement training academies • Need to teach and encourage bike laws as part of training and they will become a normal part of law enforcement’s role • New driver’s – Can be taught that bicyclists ARE a part of the road
Engineering We must all work together with those planning our roads to create safe streets for motorized and non-motorized forms of transportation.
Evaluation • Performance Measures – we must be able to show what we have accomplished • If we don’t measure it, we don’t fix it or change it • If people think biking isn’t safe it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy • Bike Safety = Safety for all!
MN Department of Transportation“Share the Road” Safety Campaign • Priority and goal is to eliminate bicycle-related fatalities and reduce crashes. • Bicyclists and motorists are equally responsible for safety. Many factors contribute to crashes including inattention, distractions and limited access for bicyclists on roads. • Provides materials, information and resources.
