  3. Tools you Need • Wire cutters • Wire strippers • Soldering iron • Solder

  4. Optional Tools • Lead bender • Exacto knife

  5. The Process • Form leads • Insert into PCB • Solder leads to pads • Trim excess leads

  6. Forming Leads Some leads are ready to insert into the PCB Some leads need to be formed

  10. Stripping Wire Correct Gauge Pull Wire Wire Stripped of Insulation

  11. Insert Components • Usually Flush • Bend Leads or Tape

  12. Holding Component in Place Spread Leads Slightly Tape Down

  13. Before You Solder Tin Tip Wipe Tip

  14. Don’t Jab!

  15. Soldering • Briefly heat pad and lead • Apply solder to pad, lead, and iron • Remove solder and iron (in that order)

  16. Heat Pad and Lead

  17. Headers

  18. IC Sockets • Use IC sockets • Solder opposing IC socket pins • Confirm flush • Rework if necessary

  20. Confirm Flush

  21. Rework if Necessary

  22. Strain Relief

  23. Trim Excess Leads

  24. And Beware of Flying Leads
