  1. alcohol Facts Is a drug found in some beverages that slows down body functions. When a person drinks alcohol, the body converts it into a very toxic chemical called acetaldehyde. If it were to build up in the body, a person could develop CIRRHOSIS- a disease in which scar tissue replaces healthy liver cells. Cirrhosis is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S.

How alcohol affects the body • Heart- heavy drinking can lead to high blood pressure. • Liver- drinking can poison the live and lead to cirrhosis. • Stomach- too much alcohol can irritate the lining of thestomach and small intestines. • Brain- alcohol weakens the brains ability to store, locate, and use info. • Blood Vessels- causes the blood vessels to widen allowing more blood to flow to the skin making a person feel warmer, but really allowing body heat to escape.

  3. Alcohol affects our decisions • Alcohol depresses (slows down) the part of the brain used for reasoning.When you drink you lose the ability to make responsible decisions. People who drink are more likely to… • Give in to peer pressure • communicate poorly with others • Experience depression • Become violent • Drive under the influence

Alcohol & relationships • You are at an age where it’s important to work on your relationships with others. • Drinking can make it difficult to learn social skills that help you connect with others. • It can affect your mood. • It can make you more talkative or give you a false feeling of closeness to others. • It can make you say things you wouldn’t normally say.

  5. It effects our relationships with… • Families- parents do not approve of you drinking alcohol. If you drink, you’ll have to sneak around and lie about what you’re doing. This destroys that trusting relationships that you have. • Friendships- Choosing to drink can cost you friendships. Others who do not approve of drinking, will not be inclined to associate with you. Their parents would not approve of them spending time with you. • Risk Behaviors- Drinking increases your chances of engaging in risk behaviors. Alcohol affects logical reasoning skills.

BLOOD ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION(bac) The amount of alcohol in a person’s blood Factors that Affect BAC: • Amount of alcohol- the more alcohol a person drinks, the higher the BAC. • Rate of drinking- drinking faster than what the liver can process increases a person’s BAC • Weight- the less a person weighs, the faster he or she will feel the effects. • Food eaten- when a person’s stomach is empty, alcohol enters the bloodstream more rapidly. • Other drugs- if another depressant drug is in the bloodstream, the effects will be greater. • Mood- if a person is depressed before drinking, it will tend to be more severe afterwards. * The higher a person’s BAC, the more short term affects the person with feel.

  7. Alcoholism-is a disease in which a person is dependant ( physical and psychological) on alcohol. Alcoholism can be inherited…know your family history!! Learn to SAY NO to alcohol. Read the resistance skills on page D36 in your book!!! Alcohol free is the way to be!!
