  2. Flag • The flag of the Northern Territory (adopted on July 1, 1978 on the first day of self-government) • The Northern Territory Flag was the first official flag that did not contain the Union Jack.

  3. Animal • The Red Kangaroo is the animal of the Northern Territory. • It is also known as the animal of Australia.

  4. Flower • Sturt's Desert Rose (Gossypium sturtianum) is a woody shrub, • It has a life cycleof about 10 years, grows from 1–2 m tall and 1–2 m wide.

  5. Bird • Wedge-tailed Eagleis the bird of the Northern Territory

Unique/Special Features Coat of Arms • The nickname for the Northern Territory is The Top End. • It is the third largest State in Australia but it has the smallest amount of people living there. • It is populated mostly by Aboriginal People. • It is known as the hottest State in Australia. • It is also most well known for it’s Tourism.

Major Tourist Spot I Like this because it looks like a Lego house • Uluru/Ayers Rock • Located in the middle of the Australian Outback. • It is well known for looking like its changing colour at different times of the day. It appears to glow red at Dawn and Sunset. • The Rock was created over 600 million years ago. • It was completely under the sea and now it is 348 meters above ground. It still has 2.5 km of its bulk under the ground. • The Rock is a holy place for an Aboriginal Tribe that has lived in the area for around 10,000 year. • It takes about 3 and ½ hours to walk around the base of Uluru, which is 10km long.   8. Special Buildings a b d c Hartley Street School – The oldest official school building located in Alice Springs, built 1929. Stuart Town Goal – Built in 1907 and stopped being used in 1938. Police Station – First Police Station now used as a Museum. Les Hanson House – one of the few houses in Alice Springs to have all of its original features.

  10. Famous people There are many famous people that come from the Northern Territory, these a some that I know. Cyril Rioli – AFL footballer who plays for Hawthorn Jessica Mauboy – Competed in Australian Idol Leisel Jones – Olympic gold medalist, swimmer

  11. Fauna and Flora Trees at the bottom of Uluru Bush Tucker (known as food) The Flora and Fauna of the Northern Territory can be broken into four different parts. Punu – Trees Puti – Shrubs Tjulpun-tjulpunpa – flowers Ukiri – grasses Some of the trees are used to make tools such as spearheads, boomerangs and bowls. Sap and other nutrients from plants are used to make medicines and other healing equipment.

  12. Climate • There are two separate climate zones in the Northern Territory. The Northern (includes Darwin) part can be very wet or very dry. • The wet season can also create tropical cyclones and monsoon rains. • The Central part (includes Uluru) usually has little rain. Tourists need to make sure they carry plenty of water. • The hottest day recorded was 49 degrees and the coldest was 7 degrees. • Geography • The Northern Territory is a land rich in geographic features. Over 20 national parks are located in the state. Some of the special geographic features include: • Rivers • Desert • Mountains • Rock Formations • Escarpments • Islands

Statistics Housing Jobs Water • Total Population of Northern Territory is 233,300 people. • In the capital City – (Darwin) live 229, 675 people which is more than half the amount of the total population. • The Highest point of the Northern Territory is Mount Zeli – 1,531 meters high. • Established by NSW in 1825. • During World War II, Darwin was bombed by Japan.

Airports Ayres Rock Alice Springs Darwin • Darwin International Airport is the major domestic and international airport for the territory. • Several smaller airports are also scattered throughout the Territory and are served by smaller airlines; including • Alice Springs Airport, • Ayers Rock Airport, • Katherine Airport and • Tennant Creek Airport.

Aboriginal History • There is evidence of settlements dating back 50,000 years, • Northern Territory is home to the oldest living culture in the world, • The Yolngu culture originated in the Arnhem Land, and the Yolngu people still live a very traditional lifestyle, • A wide range of indigenous cultures still live in the Northern territory, and over 80 aboriginal languages are still in use, • Nearly half of the Northern Territory is considered aboriginal land, • The main aboriginal groups, other than the Yolngu of the Arnhem Land, are the Arrernet, Warlpiri and Pitjantatjara in the Red Centre, • The indigenous people of the Northern Territory were artists and hunters who had established thriving trade routes with the people of Indonesia, • In the 1960’s and 1970’s the Aboriginal people fought desperately for equal rights. In 1976 the Aboriginal Land Act was passed.

Government • The Northern Territory Parliament is based on the Westminster System, (English System) • Twenty-five members of the Legislative Assembly are elected to four-year terms, just like us in Victoria. • Chief Minister – Head of the Government – Adam Giles from 2013 • Administrator – Sally Thomas from 2011 • Federal government – Nova Peris for ALP and Nigal Scullion for CLP • Local government – there are 17 areas • Aboriginal land councils – includes groups of Aboriginal Land owners
