Attendance and Punctuality • Attendance and achievement go hand in hand. • Poor attendance can result in academic under achievement, difficulty in making or keeping friends, and loss of a child's confidence. • Punctuality – if your child is late by 10 minutes they are missing an important part of the main teaching activity. e.g. we start our lessons at 8.50am.
Key focus of New Curriculum • Reading • Spelling • Times Tables knowledge
Reading • Each time you read with your child, please enter your initials or make a small comment in their reading diary. • Books will be changed when completed. Children are expected to place their finished books, with their diary, in a tray for changing. These trays are checked daily. Books will only be changed if the diary has been signed by an adult.
Spelling • We have invested in a new spelling scheme for the children. • Children will bring home words to learn on a sheet. • In class they will be revising the words but they should complete practise the words both independently and with an adult. • The children will be tested on their spellings each week.
Times tables • All children by the end of Year 4 should know all of their times tables up to 12x12 • We have a passport system in school where the children will be focussing on different times tables each week and then gaining stamps for the ones that they know. • Times tables will be tested regularly by their teacher.
Homework • Reading book and Bug Club. • Spellings • Times tables to practise • A piece of literacy homework linked to the work completed in school that week. • A piece of maths homework on Mathletics. • This will be given out Friday and collected in the following Wednesday. • There may also be occasional optional homework tasks.
Behaviour expectations • The children have worked with the teacher to create a set of class rules and class expectations. In class we use the behaviour ladder as an incentive to reward positive behaviour. • Each week a child is chosen to receive certificates in our commendation assembly and parents will be invited to attend these assemblies. The assemblies take place at the end of the school day. • We also have a ‘Writer of the Week’ award.
PE • PE: Y5 – Monday Morning • Y6 – Thursday afternoon • Children need: • T shirt in the colour of their house • Black shorts • Plimsolls • Tracksuit- Burgundy top and black • tracksuit bottoms • No jewellery • Hair tied back
Sports development • Harrow Lodge try outs for children in year 5 & 6 for both girls and boys football teams will be happening soon. • There will also be tag rugby teams and cricket teams this year. Further details of these teams will follow.
School journeys and trips • At the end of Year 6, children have the opportunity to go on a residential visit to PGL in June for 1 week. • Each class will have an enrichment for the curriculum every half term. This may be a trip, a visitor or a workshop depending on what the children are studying.
After school clubs • After school clubs will be up and running soon – if your child is interested in taking part in an after school club, please ensure that they see the sports coaches or their class teacher.
Clothing • The children are looking very smart in their uniform with logos. • Please ensure all clothes are labelled. • It is the child’s own responsibility to look after their clothes but so much easier to find the owner of a stray jumper if it has a name in it!
Healthy schools • Thank you for your continued support with the changes to break time snacks. • For break time the children may bring a piece of fruit or a cereal bar. • If your child has packed lunch, please avoid giving them fizzy drinks, crisps, sweets or chocolate.
General • Please telephone the office if your child is unable to come to school for any reason. A note the next day to the child’s class teacher is always appreciated. • If you have any issues or questions please feel free to speak to the class teacher (They are very approachable!) or leave a message at the gate. The office does not open until 9.10 am for anything other than late comers.
