  2. The Challenge • Attention aspiring engineers! The state of Michigan needs your help. The Mackinaw Bridge is beginning to deteriorate and a new bridge must be built. Governor Granholm wants the most qualified team of builders to oversee the design and construction of the new bridge. Governor Granholm has issued a challenge to find the best bridge designers this country has to offer.

  3. The Problem • You and a partner must make a bridge out of popsicle sticks and glue. • The bridge must be able to span a 16 inch gap. • The bridge must be able to hold the most amount of weight possible.

  4. Rules • 1. The bridge can only be made out of 120 popsicle sticks and white glue. • 2. The bridge can be no longer than 20 inches. • 3. The bridge must use trusses to give support and rigidity. • 4. The bridge must have two sides, a top and a bottom. • 5. The bridge must be at least 4 inches tall and at least 4 inches wide. • 6. Popsicle sticks can overlap up to 2 ¼ inches.

  5. Rubric • The bridges will be graded using a rubric.

  6. Testing • Bridges will be tested until failure. • Each bridge will be loaded at the center using a chain and weight system or bridge tester depending on the semester • The bridge must be able to accommodate the testing apparatus.

  7. Grading Items • 1. Most weight held • 2. Most efficient bridge • 3. Most aesthetically appealing bridge

  8. Schedule • Time is of the essence! • Your group must fill out a daily log (every day) to keep on track. • Everyday I will post on the screen “What you want to accomplish”
