  2. Major Organs • Muscles • You have more than 600 muscles • You have three types of muscles • Skeletal (voluntary) • Smooth(involuntary) • Cardiac • Tendons • Tendons connect muscles to bones

  3. Skeletal Muscles • Also called voluntary muscles because you chose when to move them • Most common type of muscle • Contract quickly • Tire easier than involuntary muscles • Connects to bones • Type of muscle people usually think of as muscles

  4. Skeletal Muscle

  5. Smooth and Cardiac Muscle Smooth Muscle Cardiac Muscle Found only in the heart Contracts about 70 times per minute • Also known as involuntary muscle because you don’t choose when to move them • Slowly contract and relax • Found in internal organs

  6. Smooth and Cardiac Muscle Smooth Muscle Cardiac Muscle

  7. Functions • Skeletal muscles contract to move your bones. • Cardiac muscles contract to pump blood. • Smooth muscles help your other organs with their functions.

  8. Interacts With • Skeletal system • Your muscles contract to move your bones • Nervous system • Your brain tells when to move • Cardiovascular system • Your heart is a muscle • Respiratory system • Your diaphragm is a muscle that helps you breath

  9. How Muscles Move Our Bodies

  10. How it Works • The muscular and skeletal systems work together as a lever. • The muscles provide force for body movement by contracting. • Your joints act as a fulcrum. • And your bones act as the rod.
