Making Inferences • Inference (noun) = making a conclusion based on “reading between the lines” of a source • Noun: You have been asked to make an inference in question 6. • Verb: This means that you have to infer the reasons behind the action in your photos.
Think Like Sherlock Holmes The photo doesn’t tell you everything. You need to think about things you can’t see.
Let’s Practice Inferring/Making Inferences What do we need to think about that the photo doesn’t tell us directly?
Interview • The interview is more like a discussion or a conversation. • Remember that you are supposed to draw conclusions about the lives of soldiers during the war.
Read the Rubric • Thinking: demonstrate that you chose your photos well • They are on the same topic but there is some contrast (difference) between them • Communication: draw conclusions and use vocabulary words
Primary Source Evidence • How do we know what we know in history? • By looking at primary sources such as photos, letters, posters, billboards, objects and films FROM THE TIME • Textbooks use primary sources but they are not primary sources • Historians decide what to write in textbooks by using and interpreting primary sources
Conclusions Not Descriptions • Remember that describing the photos is done on the worksheet • Drawing conclusions will be done in the interview • I believe that … • I can conclude that … • After studying the photos I can conclude that … We’re not all going to say: “I conclude that war was harsh. “
