Thunderstorms. Cumulus Stage. Growth stage Warm, humid air rises then cools and condenses. Top of cloud evaporates and makes the air more humid. This allows the cloud to grow taller. No lightning, thunder or precipitation. Cumulus Stage. Mature Stage.

Cumulus Stage • Growth stage • Warm, humid air rises then cools and condenses. • Top of cloud evaporates and makes the air more humid. This allows the cloud to grow taller. • No lightning, thunder or precipitation
Mature Stage • Downdraft – cooler air is heavier and begins to sink. • Downdraft and updraft of mature thunderstorm are called the “cell” • Most intense stage • Has lightning, thunder, heavy rain, hail
Dissipating Stage • Downdraft overpowers the updraft. This cuts off the storms supply of warm, moist air. • Lower level cloud evaporates quickly. • All three stages can happen in less than an hour
SupercellThunderstorm • Horizontal spin is tilted into updraft and causes the storm to rotate. • Often lasts longer, is larger and much more severe. • Good chance for a tornado
