The first astronaut Since ancient times people have been dreaming about space. They looked at the sky and wondered what was happening there. They knew nothing about it but they wanted to learn. Yuri Gagarin gave the mankind this opportunity. After his flight people first saw our planet.
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was the first human in space. He was born in the village of Klushino near Smolensk, on 9 March, 1934. His parents were working on the farm. Gagarin grew up helping them with their work. After the war, Gagarin went to vocational school in Moscow; his favorite subjects were physics and mathematics. In 1955 he joined a local flying club. While studying flying, he learned parachuting, a skill that would later save his life when it was time for him to eject from the Vostok 1 capsule upon its re-entry. Then he joined the Soviet Air Force and went to Orenburg Aviation School where he learned to fly MIGs. Gagarin’s childhood
In 1960, after the search and selection process, Yuri Gagarin was picked out with 19 other cosmonauts for the Soviet space program. As a full-grown man, Gagarin was 1.57 metres tall, which was an advantage in the small Vostok cockpit. Senior Lieutenant Gagarin made history on April 12, 1961, when a converted ballistic missile propelled his Vostok capsule into Earth orbit from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The Vostok was controlled automatically, and Gagarin spent his time reporting observations of the Earth and his own condition. He commented on the beauty of the earth from space and on how pleasant weightlessness felt. Gagarin rode his spacecraft for 108 minutes. The cosmonaut and capsule landed safely near the banks of the Volga River. He always wanted to venture back to space. On March 27, 1968, he took off for a routine flight in a two-seater MIG-15 trainer. He and his instructor became engaged in low-level maneuvers with two other jets. That day he was killed in air crash. He was 34. Career
Yuri Gagarin visited 30 countries. Everywhere he was given a fantastic welcomed as a respected, loved person. He was the same modest man with workers or generals, with employees or with kings and prime ministers. His life was simple like thousands of others: schoolboy, vocational school student, fighter pilot, husband, father of two children. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed swimming, fishing, camping, hunting, and the company of good friends. Yuri Gagarin liked sport very much. As well as being a keen ice hockey player, Gagarin was also in on the Saratov Industrial Technical School basketball team, as well as being a referee. His character
