This article presents a simplified ray tracing simulation for estimating the delay spread in a typical industrial plant. The simulation results show the maximum delay and the root mean square delay spread, suggesting the suitability of S-V type cluster model for outdoor industrial use cases. The article also discusses the importance of sufficient channel bandwidth for optimal performance.

Shusaku Shimada, Yokogawa Co. Estimated result of delay spread -Result of simplified ray tracing maximum delay : 3.3 us rms delay spread : ~ 600 ns -Estimated maximum delay maximum delay : 6.4 us rms delay spread : 1 us -Result suggests S-V type cluster model, typical in indoor WLAN also works in outdoor industrial use case, if the available channel bandwidth is sufficiently wide, e.g. 1~5MHz.
