  3. European division from Africa • European nations divided Central and West Africa at the Berlin West Africa Conference, The countries took Africa at random.

  4. Hawaii gives right to U.S Pearl Harbor • Riciprocity Treaty-Hawwau grants United States exclusive use of Pearl Harbor. U.S is now allowed to trade sugars.

  5. Learning to Paint • Van Gogh spent several weeks in The Hague in late 1881 taking painting lessons from his cousin by marriage, Anton Mauve, a leading member of the Hague School.

  9. A new American workforce • Gender played an important role determining educational and occupational choices for men and women. • Women now entered the work force. • The need of working women helped the suffrage movement gain a status of respect

  10. Civil rights • The 1881 Washerwomen's Strike in Atlanta was one of most successful protests held by the African Americans in the late 19th century.

  11. Atlanta Riot of 1906 • In the wake of the riot, Atlanta became one of the most segregated cities in the country. • self-sufficient communities such as Auburn Avenue began to appear • Which was a major source of black leadership, in modern day civil rights

  12. Race issues • The lynching of black women and men by white mobs became almost to common in communities near and around Atlanta between 1880 and 1910. • Black Atlantans from all segments of the city held mass rallies and petitioned to put an end to all the lynchings

  13. Labor • The most ambitious of these was the Knights of Labor. • the Knights sought to build a comprehensive organization uniting workers of all races, genders, ethnicities, and occupations • The knights grew rapidly during the 1880’s

  28. Boxer Rebellion • The boxer rebellion was a group/band of Chinese peasants that practiced boxing so they’d rid China of all foreign influence as well as to destroy the Ch’ing dynasty . • Empress Dowager backed up the boxers.

  34. Inventions • Coca Cola, John Pemberton begins selling his formula which was a mixture of cocaine and caffeine at Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia in 1886. • . It was initially sold as a patent medicine for five cents a glass at soda fountains. Coca Cola no longer contains Cocaine but that is how it got its name.

  35. More inventions • Automobile Beginnings, Karl Benz patents his first automobile, the Motorwagen, which was three wheeled, on January 29th.

  37. First Dishwasher, Josephine Cochrane, a housewife from Shelbyville, Illinois, invents and builds the First Dishwasher

  38. The Statue of Liberty, The Statue of Liberty was made in France and funded by the French people. It was shipped in 1885 to New York and placed onto Liberty Island in New York Harbor.

  39. Kodak Box Camera, George Eastman introduces the Kodak No 1which is a simple and inexpensive Box Camera that brings photography to all.
