12 Design Lessons Learnt From Jurassic Park is an overview of the Spielberg classic through the eyes of presentation designers. We have gathered 12 tips for design and delivery of great presentations learnt from the movie.
E N D
WITH THE EXCITING RE-RELEASE OF JURASSIC PARK IN 3D WE THOUGHT WE WOULD TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE SOME FUN CONTENT RETRACING THE LESSONS LEARNT FROM JURASSIC PARK TO THE PROBLEMS THAT DESIGNERS AND PRESENTERS OFTEN HAVE TO FACE.
LESSON #1 JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD.
MALCOLM TELLS HAMMOND THAT HIS SCIENTISTS TOOK THINGS TOO FAR.
WHEN DESIGNING KEEP ANIMATIONS SIMPLE. JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN USE A PINWHEEL ROTATION DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD! FADE, FLY IN AND WIPE ARE SUBTLE BUT EFFECTIVE ANIMATIONS.
LESSON#2 ACCEPTING WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL AND WHAT YOU CAN’T.
ELLIE TELLS HAMMOND THAT HE NEVER HAD CONTROL.
WHEN DESIGNING YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY CONTROL INSTEAD, CHANNEL YOUR CREATIVITY TOWARDS OTHER ELEMENTS OVER THE OVERALL LOOK, IF YOU’RE FOLLOWING A SPEC SHEET. SUCH AS IN-SLIDE ILLUSTRATIONS.
LESSON#3 THE FOUNDATIONS OF CHANGE & GROWTH RELY ON AGE-OLD KNOWLEDGE.
THE BEGINNINGS OF HAMMOND’S THEME PARK LIE WITH THE ORIGINAL DINOSAUR EXPERTS.
WHEN DESIGNING GET INSPIRED BY EXISTING AND AWARD WINNING DESIGNS. AND INSURE YOU ARE BUILDING AN EYE CATCHING PRESENTATION. THIS WILL HELP ACCELERATE YOUR PRODUCTION
LESSON#4 BE OPEN TO CHANGE.
ALAN LEARNT THAT KIDS AREN'T SO BAD.
BE WILLING TO CHANGE YOUR STYLE. DON’T KEEP DOING THE SAME THING. LOOK INTO NEW DESIGN TRENDS. SEEK INSPIRATION ONLINE. WHEN DESIGNING
LESSON#5 KEEP THAT WHICH YOU LOVE NEAR.
EXHAUSTED AFTER THEIR TERRIFYING JOURNEY, ELLIE AND ALAN REUNITE WITH A LONG EMBRACE.
WHEN DESIGNING IF YOU’RE IN A HURRY THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH RE-USING CHERISHED DESIGN ELEMENTS; FONTS, LAYOUTS, COLOURS.
#6 LESSON WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY.
ALAN AND THE CHILDREN DISCOVER THAT THE DINOSAURS “FOUND A WAY” TO BREED, DESPITE THE ATTEMPTS OF THE SCIENTISTS TO PREVENT IT.
POWERPOINT SOMETIMES LACKS FLEXIBILITY TRY COMBINING DIFFERENT TOOLS (E.G. ANIMATIONS) TO REACH A SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEM. WHEN DESIGNING
#7 LESSON INSTEAD OF RUNNING FROM YOUR FEARS YOU SHOULD CONFRONT THEM!
LEXI IS FRIGHTENED AT FIRST BY THE BRACHIOSAUR AFTER HER ENCOUNTER WITH THE T-REX, BUT SOON LEARNS IT’S A GENTLE GIANT.
WHEN PRESENTING ALWAYS STAY CALM THE AUDIENCE IS NOT GOING TO EAT YOU ALIVE, BUT YOU DO HAVE TO SHOW CONFIDENCE.
LESSON#8 BRAWNS CAN WIN OVER BRAINS.
THE BRAWNY T-REX CHAMPIONS THE BRAINY PHILOSO-RAPTORS.
WHEN PRESENTING SOMEONE IN THE AUDIENCE MAKE YOUR CONTENT BULLETPROOF BY WILL CHALLENGE WHAT YOU’RE SAYING. ONLY INCLUDING ROCK-SOLID DATA THAT YOU CAN BACK UP.
LESSON#9 TIMING IS KEY.
WITH PERFECT TIMING, THE T-REX SAVES ALAN, ELLIE, AND THE KIDS IN THIS DRAMATIC END SCENE.
WHEN PRESENTING CREATE A STORY YOUR AUDIENCE WILL FOLLOW. USE AN INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOP THE CONTENT WITH A PURPOSEFUL DIRECTION. BE SURE TO PRACTICE YOUR PRESENTATION PACING!
#10 LESSON DON’T LET SUCCESS GO TO YOUR HEAD.
HAMMOND RELISHES IN THE SHOCK INDUCED ON ALAN AND ELLIE, AS THEY WITNESS THE BLOODTHIRSTY FEEDING OF THE RAPTORS.
WHEN PRESENTING SHOW SOME CONFIDENCE. BUT DON’T BE ARROGANT, OR YOUR AUDIENCE WON’T RELATE. A GOOD PRESENTER BALANCES CONFIDENCE WITH EMPATHY.
LESSON #11 DON’T HIDE FROM YOUR WEAKNESSES.
ALAN IS TRYING HIS BEST TO AVOID BEING SEATED WITH THE CHILDREN.
WHEN PRESENTING DON’T HIDE BEHIND YOUR WEAKNESSES. TRY SHARING THEM WITH THE AUDIENCE IN A HUMOURISTIC WAY. IT WILL QUICKLY HELP CREATE A CONNECTION WITH THEM.
LESSON #12 DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP.
ALAN, ELLIE, AND MALCOLM ARE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE LACK OF DINOSAURS ON THEIR TOUR.
WHEN PRESENTING DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP TOO HIGH BECAUSE YOU WON’T NECESSARILY GET A STANDING OVATION. DON’T FORGET WITH A QUESTION PERIOD AND HAVE A CALL TO ACTION. THAT YOUR PRESENTATION IS ONLY THE FIRST STEP. BE SURE TO FOLLOW UP
