What is Adolescence? • A time of transition when people graduate from the dependency of childhood to the independence of adulthood. • All areas of development are changing. • There is no beginning and no end. • Not every teen goes through adolescence at the rate or in the same way. • The strength of the family relationship will contribute to how well the teen adjusts to these changes.
What happens? • Individuals experience rapid growth in height and weight. • Both Males and Females grow taller and become stronger. • Begin puberty looking like children and end puberty clearly looking like adults. • Begin to ask “Who am I?” • Explore their independence and self-expression through their social relationships with their friends.
Physical Changes Male Female • Begin to grow later than girls. • At 16 boys are often bigger and stronger than girls. • Between 11 & 18 a male will double his weight. • Shoulders become wider and more muscular. • Begin to grow earlier than boys. • Girls don’t grow much after age 15. • Girls grow about 6 inches between 11 & 15 and gain about 30-40 lbs. • Average height of a female 5feet 4 inches and weighs on average 125lbs.
Sexual Development Males Females • Males mature sexually about 2 years after females. • Males genitals become larger • Begin to mature sexually at about the age of 11 or 12. • Menstruation begins about 2 years after breasts develop. • An increase in the hormone estrogen is responsible for the menstrual periods.
Intellectual Development • Changes in sense of responsibility. • Changes in priorities. • Better able to problem solve.
Emotional Development • Mood Swings • Emotional ups and downs • Improved control of emotions as you progress through adolescence.
Social Development • Attractions to new friends. • Changing Family relationships. • Greater independence • Desire to spend more time with friends. • Questioning parental authority (any adult authority). • Affected by media on decisions with music, dress, self-concept, ideas, speech, movement and attitudes.
