“Brothers of the big waves share prize money” San Mateo Sentinel, January 12, 2008 Saturday, six of the best in the big-wave brotherhood decided to put their kinship on display for the world. During an early lull in the one-hour final, before anyone had taken a wave, someone made a suggestion: Why not share the $75,000 in prize money up for grabs Instead of a one-hour big-wave slugfest, the six surfers decided upon a big-wave bonding session. In surf parlance, a free surf. If anything, it seemed to raise the bar in the water. In the end it was about brotherhood "That just shows you the spirit of Mavericks," said contest director Jeff Clark. "All for one and one for all."
