TWAREN TaiWan Advanced Researchand Education Network
The TWAREN Initiative • TWAREN is part of a comprehensive, six-year national plan formulated by the government to stimulate creativity and foster talents. • Pairing with a twin project, KING (Knowledge Innovation National Grid), the two serve as the enablers in facilitating scientific discoveries and knowledge creations, in global collaborations and resource sharing. • Both projects at our Center began January, 2003
Ground Breaking • TWAREN signifies a very big advance for Taiwan’s research network since TANet2. • It breaks many new grounds for R&E networks in Taiwan: • The telecom deregulation, three years hence, has effectively lowered cost • Competition makes fiber provisioning possible, albeit partial ownership • Our twin project, KING, also generously funded, will be the primary driver for scientific applications
Core Nodes in Science Parks • Three of the four core nodes are strategically placed in Taiwan’s science parks to serve industrial R&D besides academic research • Each node is assigned a primary function • The NCHC HQ in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, will be a resource center for computing • Our southern branch, to be completed in 2004, will house the Network Operation Center • An additional office, to be built in central Taiwan, serves as the Knowledge Center

A Hybrid Network • TWAREN is a new hybrid network with 10G POS and DWDM technologies at its core • Dual circuits form the backbone. Two local carriers, Chunghwa Telecom and Eastern Broadband Telecom, each provides a 10 G POS network linking the four core nodes. • There are eleven GigaPoPs, each links to the core node at 10 GbE • Total bandwidth for the backbone is 80 G. Combined with fibers, the total bandwidth for the GigaPoPs is 205 G

Network Architecture Design Goals • Carrier-class architecture and equipment • High-speed backbone, multi-serveice PoPs • Dual circuits to guard against failure • Scalable and flexible • Fiber ownership or control
Circuits by Chunghwa Telecom • The CHT 10 G DWDM Network offers 10 G optical channels. • The company's two main networks on the western shore are built with single mode, 96-fiber capacity. • Nortel OPTera Long Haul 1600 were installed on both main networks. • It is capable of delivering 40λ of 10 Gbps optical channels.

Circuits by EBT (Eastern Broadband Telecom) • A new telecom company formed after deregualation • Fibers deployed along the railroads. • In cooperation with Taiwan Railway Company which has extensive rails system. • Dual routing and protection also provided by the company’s 10G DWDM network

Imaging Neural Structures • A collaboration between Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (US) and Taiwan • The Taiwan NSC awarded one million US dollars to Prof. Chiang Ann-Shyn of NCTU for probing the brains of fruit flies • Mutants (memory) are supplied by CSH • The NCHC does the image processing and buids the database online (led by Dr. Chang-Huain Hsieh) • Analyzed images will be stored at the NCHC, a case in collaborative, distributed storage
