  2. Nationalist Leaders • Nationalism- feeling of strong pride in one’s country • Unified the country to fight for: • Independence • Self-rule • National advancement • Ethnic identification • Resentment of Western dominion • Wanted Decolonization- Europe to retreat from their country

  3. Asia • Before WWII • SE Asia under Western imperialism • During WWII • Under Japanese imperialism • After WWII • Didn't want to go back to Western imperialism

  4. India • Controlled by British since 1700s • Indian National Congress formed- establish self-rule and complete independence • Muslim League formed to protect citizens rights

Ho Chi Minh- Vietnam • Lead the Viet Minh guerilla soldiers against Japanese and French  War in Vietnam • Adopted Marxism in France: • Wanted to revolt from the ruling class • Wanted a classless society (no higher powers- Europeans) • Used Marxism as path to successful revolution – everyone should be equal • Gained independence

Africa • WWII- Africans were recruited to fight for Allies • Wanted independence • Pan Africanism: nationalistic movement that unified all Africans • Wanted trade Unions • African National Congress • Governing political party • Made rights for South African population • Ended foreign control (European decolonization)
