CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – October 2011 Carbon Management Steering Board 7th October 2011 Filter Survey - Update
CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – October 2011 Initiative • Trials on filter medium used in AHU’s in SAF suggest significant energy / carbon savings are possible. • Improvements can be achieved in two respects: • Reducing HEPA supply air medium in non-critical areas. • Replacement of standard AHU filter medium with more efficient filters, where plant space is available. • Optimisation of filter changing; study to measure energy consumption over lifetime of filters to identify the time when energy costs exceed the value of maintenance costs
CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – October 2011 Progress to date • A survey of all College buildings is 80% complete, with only two building groups ongoing. • HEPA filters on the supply air to SAF AHU’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 17 & 18 in SAF building, have been changed fro H13 to H10 grade • Study of filter media efficiency has commenced on AHU 3 in Biochemistry.
CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – October 2011 SAF HEPA filter changes • H13 filters changed on AHU’s to H10 media, between 23rd and 31st August 2011 • Immediate reduction in fan speed resulted across all six AHU’s, although a fault on a pressure transducer serving AHU 2 was discovered • Savings identified across the units are: • 55,419 kWhr per annum • 30.15 tonnes CO2 per annum • £3,602 electricity cost per annum • Plus lower maintenance costs per annum
CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – October 2011 AHU 4 - 50% reduction in power consumed
