  2. What is public speech? • Speech: Any time you stand up in front of a group of people-no matter how small- and talk, you are giving a speech • Public Speaking: The art of delivering a speech to a group of people

  3. What makes you good..? • Knowledge • Self Confidence • Enthusiasm • Preparation • Message • Listening Skills • Integrity and Sense of Self

  4. Know…. • The needs of your audience • Your materials thoroughly • What your strong and weak points are • That you’re going to be successful • People want you to succeed • The use of cue cards

  5. You are an actor on stage • Dress appropriately • Be solemn if your topic is serious • Present the desired image to your audience • Look pleasant, enthusiastic, confident, calm • Remain Appear relaxed, even if you feel nervous

  6. Continued … • Speak slowly, show appropriate emotion and feeling • Make sure your voice is loud enough • Various tone, not monotonous • Adjust your voice accordingly if there is a microphone • Etc

  7. Body language • Standing, walking or moving with appropriate hand gesture • Facial expression is preferred to reading in a prepared speech • Ignore if you have erred and no one noticed

  8. Speak with conviction • Persuade you audience effectively • Introduction • Thesis statement • Body • Strong supporting arguments • Accurate and up-to-date information • Conclusion • Restate thesis, summary, logical conclusion

  10. Do.. • Sincere eye contact • Listen, respond, adjust and adapt • Communicate • Pause • Add humor • Use audio visual aids (if provided) • Be ready for the handout • Know to stop talking • Summarize to end your presentation
