  1. 1 2010 Annual Report on Sustainability Policy Nathan Brostrom Executive Vice President, Business Operations Patrick J. Lenz Vice President, Budget and Capital ResourcesJanuary 18, 2011

  2. Video on UC Sustainability http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ9hcIs6570

  3. Green Building Clean Energy Climate Protection Sustainable Transportation Sustainable Operations Recycling and Waste Management Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Faculty, Staff and Student Collaboration External Recognition 3 Highlights of 2010 Accomplishments

  4. 50 LEED Certified Projects: Most of any university in the country 175 completed and ongoing new construction & renovation projects with green building targets 4 1. Green Building – LEED Certifications

  5. This slide intentionally left blank. Speaking notes continue below.

  6. UC projects are designed to exceed state energy code by 20% Estimated $7M in annual operational savings from 167 projects $8M in incentive payments expected from these projects 5 1. Green Building – Energy Cost Savings Sustainability Resource Center UCSD – LEED-CI Gold Morgan Hall Laboratory Renovation UCB – LEED-CI Gold Cowell Dining Commons UCSC – LEED-CI Certified Clark Kerr Campus Renewal UCB – LEED-CI Gold

  7. New California Green Building Standards Code, CALGreen, went into effect Jan. 1, 2011 UC new construction projects shall comply with the mandatory provisions UC Policy requires LEED NC Silver, which is 50-59 LEED points CALGreen mandatory measures equate to approx. 13 LEED points 5 1. Green Building – CALGreen Code University Village Redevelopment UCB – LEED-NC Certified Education & Social Science Building UCSB – LEED-NC Silver Engineering II, UCSB – LEED-NC Gold

  8. Energy Efficiency Partnership 2004-2012 Use operational savings + utility grants to finance energy efficiency projects $8.2M in grant funding received in 2010 Total of $38M received since 2004 Annual cost savings from projects implemented to date: $21M 6 2. Clean Energy: Energy Efficiency UC Davis committed to reduce the campus's electricity use for lighting by 60% by the end of 2015

  9. Leadership: UCSD received 1st Annual Climate Leadership Award Business Risk: climate regulation cost impact - approx. $7M-$28M annually Planning to maintain leadership and reduce business risk: Working with CARB for fair treatment of UC under cap-and-trade regulation Scoping potential large scale renewable energy projects Other large-scale GHG reduction projects 7 3. Climate Protection

  10. Awards UCSB wins Bicycle Friendly Business Gold Award UCI wins Green California Leadership Award for bike-sharing program UC Davis given “Green Fleet Award” New or Improved Programs Diesel particulate filters on fleet vehicles reduced particulate emissions 86% (UCSD) Acquired 5 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for a pilot carpool program (UCLA) Installed a new compressed natural gas fueling station (UCSD) New shuttles with larger bike trailers to accommodate more bike commuters (UCSC) 8 4. Sustainable Transportation Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at UCLA Bike trailers on shuttles at UCSC

  11. 9 5. Sustainable Operations • UCSB earned 2 more LEED for Existing Buildings certifications • Campus total now = 5 certified buildings • Streamlined LEED certification • UCM, UCI and UCSB piloted a program for the U.S. Green Building Council that now allows certification of campus-wide credits • UCSD, UCB written up as national models for student engagement UCSB Life Sciences Building LEED-EBOM Silver (2010) UCSB Harder Stadium Office Annex LEED-EBOM Silver (2009)

  12. 10 6. Waste Reduction • UC Davis took first place in the national EPA Game Day Challenge • Diverted the most waste (90%) of any college football stadium in the country (Ohio State was 2nd at 68%) Target for solid waste diversion from landfills: 2008: 50%; 2012: 75%; 2020: 100%

  13. 11 7. Sustainable Purchasing • 23% of purchases through system-wide contracts meet one or more sustainable product criteria (up from 12% in 2009) • 85% of total multi-use paper purchases have 30% or more recycled content (compared with 66% in the previous fiscal year) • Data collection on sustainable purchases is still uneven, making it difficult to compare numbers from one year to the next • Efforts in 2011 will focus on improving the quantitative and qualitative reporting of sustainable products UC encourages and tracks the use of EPEATTM, ENERGY STARTM, and Green SealTM-certified products

  14. UCSD received $33 million for clean energy research using the campus as a living lab UCSC received $180,000 in grants for Sustainability Internship Program UCD, UCI, UCM, and UCSD received grants to develop mixed renewable energy technologies on campus UCLA received $20 million to use the campus as a living lab for smart grid research International Association of Research Universities sustainability student exchange UCB Sustainability Office sent students to U. Cambridge and U. Tokyo UCB hosted students from U. Oxford and U. Copenhagen 13 8. Student/Faculty/Staff Collaboration UCSB office greening team receives award at CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference UCSD course installs micro-weather research station on campus buildings

  15. UC Sustainability initiatives mentioned in 100 news stories, including multiple radio and TV spots UC was recognized as a leader in all higher education sustainability rankings in 2010 UC won 14 state and national sustainability awards, for example: UCSF Medical Center earns Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth UCSC won Acterra’s 2010 Business Environmental Award UCOP wins Business Efficiency Award for waste reduction efforts 14 9. External Recognition

  16. 15 FutureSteps • Work with Air Resources Board on fair plan to reduce emissions while avoiding a disproportionate cost impact • Climate Solutions Steering Group: take system-wide large-scale carbon reduction initiatives from concept to implementation • Streamline LEED certification using campus-wide credits • Evaluate the requirements of CALGreen building code • Propose water policy guidelines

  17. Climate Solutions Steering GroupOverview of Campus Site Visits Campuses grasp the scale and difficulty Focused on 2014 Deep energy-efficiency projects key 2014 strategy Procuring carbon attributes = last resort Idea of UC carbon offset fund

  18. The Emerging Strategy...

  19. Campuses cannot attain carbon-neutrality on-site Need mega-scale, off-site renewable power Existing natural gas combustion infrastructure needs a climate-neutral solution Need the ability to transport renewable power from large off-site projects to campuses Recap
