SHORT REVIEW OF THE SNIFFERS • 1991 Start-up of The Sniffers (one man company) • 1994 Creation of THE SNIFFERS NV • 1997 Young European Entrepreneur • 2003 ISO9001 – VCA* Certification • 2004 Expansion towards Gulf region • 2005 KMO company of 2005 (VOKA) • 2006 UNIZO KMO entrepreneur of the year 2006 • 2007 ADNOC HSE Award • 2008 Expansion towards Asia • 2008 Gazelle reward for fast growing company • 2009 Start-up of Energy Saving Division • 2009 ADNOC HSE Award • 2010 Move to new offices
TODAY, THE SNIFFERS HAS TWO MAIN SERVICE LINES • Measuring and controling of fugitive emissions of a wide range of possible leak sources (in chemical or petrochemical sites), • Full range of services for different types of leaks and leak sources • Full gamma of different services for HP and MP/LP pipelines like: • Leak detection • Pipeline integrity inspections • Measuring of coating and cathodic protection of pipelines • … Emission Monitoring Fugitive Emissionmonitoring Steam lossmonitoring Flare lossmonitoring Pipeline inspection and leak detection
THE SNIFFERS – LDAR EXPERIENCES Description • Started as pioneer in 1991 • Today, European Market leader in LDAR • 19 years of experience in emission monitoring • Over 45 trained specialists • Projects over whole Europe • Since 2005 active in Abu Dhabi & Dubai • Since 2006 active in Qatar • September 2008: active in Kuwait • November 2009: active in KSA • Focus on Europe and Middle-East • Expand to Asia • Expand to Africa EU Market leader Middle-East Near future
WHAT ARE FUGITIVE EMISSIONS AND WHAT IS LDAR? • Fugitive emissions are atmospherical emissions coming from process line equipment, such as valves, flanges, pump seals, open ended lines, compressor- and agitator seals, pressure relief valves, … • Even when an equipment only suffers a little emission, all leaks in a complete process plant can together cause a huge emission. • An LDAR (Leak Detection And Repair) program is a project or a program to measure, to control and to reduce fugitive emissions.
Main purpose of LDAR program • Getting knowledge/confirmation of the Estimated Fugitive Emissions of all the units. • Reduction of Fugitive Emissions: • Direct, by source measurements in the unit followed by a first-repair-attempt. • Indirect, by improving the inspection- and maintenance program (e.g. follow-up measurements, planned reparation during shut-down) Whenyoumeasure youknow
WHY: 1. ENVIRONMENT • Less emissions (cleaner world) • Health of employees less imissions • Take care of stake holders • Better waste treatment
WHY: 2. SAFETY • Less emissions • Reduce risk for fire • Reduce risk for explosions • safer environment for neighbors
WHY: 3. REGULATIONS • To be in accordance with the National and/or International regulations • EPA, IPPC, CEN, ADNOC, ….. : code of practice, … • Corporate guidelines / policies • Alignment with SHE program • Alignment with Responsible Care programs • Permit requirements
WHY: 4. COST SAVINGS BY LDAR • First zero monitoring campaign: define base line • Perform first repair attempt • Re-monitoring after repair • Reducing Emissions will lead to • cost savings (less product loss) • Less raw material spill • Better process optimalisation • Improved working environment • Image building Cfr case studies
PRODUCT LOSSES ON REFINERIES ARE BETWEEN 250 AND 1 100 TON PER YEAR
BENCHMARK - LDAR SAVINGS FOR EUROPEAN CRACKERS Whitin the first year, Fugitive Emissions were in average reduced by 50% or ~ 250 000 kg per year
BENCHMARK - LDAR SAVINGS FOR PP UNIT Fugitive Emissions were reduced by 78% in 2 years
BENCHMARK - LDAR SAVINGS FOR HDPE UNITS For a typical HDPE Unit, Fugitive Emissions were reduced by 70% or ~ 142 000 kg per year after first repair round
BENCHMARK - LDAR BENCHMARKING ON CRACKERS For a typical cracker, 85% of the Fugitive Emissions are on average created by Stems, Connections and Flanges
SUMMARY OF FUGITIVE EMISSIONS SOURCESNL/EU/UAE/KUWAIT/QATARNo limitations per size • Valves, • Stem of manual valve • Stem of control valve • Flanges, • Pump seals, • Open ended lines, • Compressor- and agitator seals, • Pressure relief valves: outlets, • Sample points, • Connectors.
