  1. Space Exploration

  2. A Space Community • If you could take a space trip, where would you go? • What would you see? • What kind of spaceship would you need?

  3. Sir Isaac Newton Born in England in 1662 • Wondered what held the stars in place • Discovered gravity while sitting under an apple tree

  4. Born in Massachusetts in 1882 Wondered what kinds of things rockets might do for us Built his first rocket in 1926 It went 41 feet in the air Made special fuels and pumps to get rockets off the ground Dr. Robert Goddard

  5. Space Travelers • Flew as a fighter pilot for the Marines in World War II. • was assigned to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1959 as one of the original group of Mercury astronauts for the Project Mercury. • He piloted the first American manned orbital mission aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962. • At age 77, Glenn became the oldest person ever to go into space. John Glenn is in the cockpit of the MR-3 spacecraft during one of many simulated flight tests to insure all capsule systems are in a "go" condition.

  6. Shepard was one of the Mercury astronauts named by NASA in April 1959 to Project Mercury • holds the distinction of being the first American to journey into space, as well as the only Mercury astronaut to walk on the Moon. • He was originally assigned to command Apollo 13 • At age 47, and the oldest astronaut in the program, Shepard made his second space flight as commander of Apollo 14 • the only person to play golf on the Moon with a Spalding six-iron head attached to a lunar sample scoop handle. First American in Space Alan Shepard (1923 - 1998)

  7. Flew as a fighter pilot for the Navy in the Korean War. • Flew X-1 and X-15 rocket planes for NASA as a test pilot. • Flew the Gemini 8 program • Flew as commander of the Apollo 11 mission • became the first man to walk on the moon. First man on the moon Neil Armstrong

  8. Space Exploration The Voyager 1 spacecraft is a 722-kilogram robotic space probe of the outer solar system and beyond, launched September 5, 1977, and currently operational. It visited Jupiter and Saturn and was the first probe to provide detailed images of the moons of these planets.

  9. Voyager 2 is an unmanned interplanetary spacecraft launched on August 20, 1977. Voyager 2 is perhaps the most productive space probe yet deployed, visiting four planets and their moons, including two primary visits to previously unexplored planets, with powerful cameras and a multitude of scientific instruments.

  10. Rocket Technology • Ancient & Model rockets use solid fuel • Used mainly as a weapon • Dr. Goddard invented liquid fuel rockets • In 1939, U.S., Great Britain, Soviet Union, & Germany began developing rockets for military uses • Germany created V-2, most successful of military rockets • Sputnik, first man-made object in space

  11. The Space Race • Sputnik 2, launched in 1957 by USSR, took Laika the dog on an trip around the Earth. Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968)

  12. The Space Race • NASA was created in 1958 to help the U.S. beat the USSR in space exploration.

  13. The Space Race • In 1961, USSR put the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968)

  14. The Space Race • Alan Shepard, Jr. was the first American astronaut in space.

  15. The Space Race • John Glenn, Jr. was the first person to orbit the Earth in the spacecraft Friendship 7.

  16. The Space Race Russian cosmonaut, Aleksei Leonov was the first man to walk in space in 1965.

  17. The Space Race • Astronaut Ed White became the first American to walk in space on June 3, 1965.

  18. The Space Race • First successful landing on the moon was by the Russian spacecraft Luna 9 on February 3,1966.

  19. The Space Race • First American landing on the moon was by Surveyor 1 on June 1, 1966.

  20. The Space Race • July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin land on the moon on the Apollo 11 mission. • Neil Armstrong walks on the moon.

  21. Space Stations • In 1971, the Soviet Union lanched Salyut 1, the world’s first space station.

  22. Space Stations • In 1973, the U.S. launched the first American space station, Skylab.

  23. Space Stations • In 1986, the Russian space station Mir was launched and lasted for 15 years.

  24. Space Stations • In 1996, NASA, the Russian, European, Japanese, and Canadian space agencies join forces to build the International Space Station.
