  1. Sustainability Session, June 4th 2014 Future-Proof Natural Foams for the USDA BioPreferred® Program Jeff Rowlands – Natural Foams Technology (UK) www.naturalfoams.com jeff.rowlands@naturalfoams.com

  2. Disclaimer Cal 117, Cal TB 117-1975, Cal TB 117-2013 and the Cone Calorimeter protocols discussed in this Presentation and the associated written Paper are small-scale flammability tests. Any flammability ratings and figures from these tests are not intended to reflect hazards by foam or any other material under actual fire conditions.

  3. Previous Milestones We have made commercial-quality foams with 35% by weight of bio-based material These foams pass Cal 117-1975 flammability test without flame retardant emissions They also pass the VDA 278 VOC emissions test

  4. Today’s Milestones We are completing work on a new class of foams with 50% by weight of bio-based material (replacing 82 php of the standard petrochemical polyol) These foams can pass both parts of the VDA 278 emissions test (VOC & FOG) with zero FR emissions The foams also produce 80% less smoke than foams made previously for Cal 117-1975

  5. * Cal 117 -1975

  6. Cone Calorimeter apparatus at the University of Central Lancashire, UK.

  7. Safety and Sustainability This technology offers the best route to producing an environmentally friendly foam with all the old safeguards of Cal 117-1975 foam The foams are ultra-low emissions overall and have zero flame retardant emissions If customers prefer foams without flame retardant, the technology also provides the best environmental route to producing Cal 117-2013 foam Both foams offer future-proof technology incorporating advanced green chemistry, with up to 80% reduction in smoke compared to the best existing technologies

  8. Acknowledgements The author would like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of: Mark Ragsdale and his group at Milliken Chemicals, Spartanburg, SC 29303, USA, for work and guidance in the use of Milliguard AOX-1 in NOP formulations associated with Natural Foams’ technology. PolyGreen Chemicals (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, 60000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for cooperation and supply of special samples in connection with the antioxidant changes. Herr Doktor SabyasachiGaan at EMPA Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, 9014 Sankt Gallen, Switzerland, for the Cone Calorimeter data. Herr Doktor Frank Osterod of Clariant GmbH, 50354 Hürth, Germany, for producing the Cone Calorimeter data into a viewable form.

  9. Thanks to for the invitation to this UTECH Conference and thank YOU ALL for listening. www.naturalfoams.com/publications
