The Pharaohs Click me • Rulers in Egypt inherit their right to rule simply by being born into the ruling family • The rulers in Egypt are called Pharaohs (literally translated as “great house”) • Pharaohs are very powerful because they have both political and religious authority (they are considered gods among the people of Egypt) • This power is extended to priests and both religion and government are one in the same.
Ancient Egyptian Government Click Here • The Pharaohs combine their power into one central government. • The government is located in one place and ruled from the top down • This allows for things like developing relationships with local civilizations such as the Nubians

Polytheism and Ancient Egyptian construction Click Here • Polytheism is the worshiping of many gods. • Pyramids and obelisks are built for religious purposes and as and memorials to the Pharaohs.
Reading and writing Click Here • The Egyptians develop hieroglyphics. Glyphs are symbols that show a word or letter. • The “book of the dead” is the world’s first instruction manual (dealing with the dead).
Science and medicine Click Here • The Egyptian Calendar is one of the first attempts to keep track of time on a larger scale. • Egyptian medicine is an early form of scientific treatment (it works so well that some of their techniques are adopted in the Renaissance).
