How do humans impact on the World? We aim to answer the following main questions: How do humans impact on the Taiga?
We ask specialists Kiindle, Bill and James 3 questions about 3 different animals from the Taiga forest. • Kiindle: Snowshoe Rabbit • Bill: Grizzly Bear • James: Canadian Lynx
First We Interview Kiindle “Why does the Snowshoe Rabbit live in the Taiga Forest, is there any history behind this or any info behind this?” “No, but scientists are currently researching the history behind the Snowshoe Rabbit.” “What does the snowshoe rabbit eat, does it have a special diet, is it a herbivore, a carnivore or an omnivore and does it eat special foods at special times?” “The snowshoe rabbit is an omnivore so it eats plants, herbs and young and small animals. The snowshoe eats human but does not kill humans and they eat all foods at all times.” “Why doesn’t the snowshoe rabbit hibernate, how does it find it’s food in winter and where does it go in winter?” “The snowshoe rabbit doesn’t hibernate because the snowshoe rabbit doesn’t need to because they don’t need to eat as much food at a time, it finds it’s food by using it’s two front legs and it goes and sleeps in a burrow like all rabbits in winter.”
Next We Interview Bill Why is the grizzly bear classed as a carnivore? The grizzly bear is not a carnivore because it eats fish. It is a simple misunderstanding. What is the life cycle of the grizzly bear? When the cub is born the cub eats lots of food getting chubbier. Then the cub and its mother come out of theirden at spring and the mother teaches thecub to hunt and protect it’s self. Whenthe cub is old enough it leaves and mates and continues the cycle. Why are the grizzly bears endangered how are humans helping them to increase their population? They're endangered due to poaching. There are breeding programs to help increase the numbers and now poaching is illegal in most places.
FinallyWe Interview James What is the main source of food, shelter and water for the lynx and if any of these where taken away what would happen? The main food source of the lynx is the snow shoe rabbit. It would get its water from streams and rivers etc. It does not have shelter because it doesn’t need it. If the snow shoe rabbits died the lynx would lessen most likely dying if the water was taken away it would die from dehydration. Does the colour of the Canadian Lynx impact on anything? Yes it acts as camouflage to help it hide and hunt. Has the lynx had to adapt to the Taiga forest? Yes it has, it’s paws have spread to act like snow shoes to help it walk on the snow.

We Ask How Current Events Impact On Their Animal And The Taiga Forest • Kiindle says: Global warming is dropping the population quickly for the animals that live in the Taiga forest because the ice is melting and their homes are being destroyed. humans do affect the Taiga forest by the global warming humans are creating and the trees they are cutting down. • Bill says: Current cutting of trees has restricted the area of where the grizzly bear can live and global warming hasn’t been helping salmon which has been impacting on the grizzly bear so nature and man are not really helping the grizzly bear or the Taiga forest. • James says: Due to current global warming and land clearing of trees for agriculture and resources, the lynx habitat is slowly being depleted. Since the snowshoe rabbits numbers are rapidly dropping the lynx food is running out and these endangered animals will soon no longer be in the Taiga forest. So humans do have a negative impact on the animals of the taiga and the Taiga
Things That Threaten The Taiga Forests Future • Threats • Fires, pulp cutting, logging, spraying, clearing for agriculture matters are major threats. • Alberta has committed 220,000 km2 of its taiga to be cut down over the next 60 years • Manitoba has singed 20 per cent of the entire province for cutting to a single company which is 198,000 square kilometres. • Land cleared and cultivated increased from 58 per cent in 1948 to 85 per cent in 1974. • Clearing of mature forest for agriculture makes up as much as 7.5 per cent of the total area per year
