IDA RD&I Strategy • Leverage State’s investment to encourage, support, drive and capture RD&I from MNCs • Generate and implement initiatives that build an applied research capability • Foster an environment of ‘collaboration’ between business, academia & Government • Ensure RD&I policies are business friendly
RD&I Supports • Training & Feasibility • RD&I Support Grant • R&D Tax Credit • 25% tax credit on R&D activities • Intellectual Property tax exemptions • Exemption from stamp duty on transfer of IP • Tax exemption on income earned from royalties on qualifying Irish patents
Training & Feasibility Support • Support for first time RD&I activity • Feasibility Study • Training support • Pilot RD&I project • Maximum Grant available €250K • Grant range 25% to 50% depending on nature and purpose of activities
RD&I Support Grant 4 Models Standalone Company establishes a unique centre to support either corporate research or an innovation agenda through a standalone facility in Ireland Collaborative RD&I project that is dependent on a substantial engagement with an Irish academic institution Development & Manufacturing or Services Delivery RD&I process or product development to reduce costs and increase quality and output Development & Commercialisation RD&I investment whose outputs will be commercialised and delivered from Ireland
Evaluation of RD&I Proposals • Overall objective is to support new andincrementalinvestment • Evaluated on: • Commercial benefits • Economic benefits • Technical complexity & innovation • Grant rate dependent on evaluation • Value for the State’s money
Benefits to MNCs of Irish RD&I Investment • Sustains existing operations and jobs in Ireland • Adds new high level business function(s) • Creates highly skilled R&D centres • Enhances capabilities of existing operations • heightens the profile of the Irish subsidiary with its parent • helps position Irish company for additional investment from parent
