BELLRINGER Name one reason the Alamo was significant for Texas independence?
MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR America’s first controversial war
New Mexico Territory • New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. • Santa Fe • First Spanish settlement in New Mexico • William Becknell was first American trader to reach Santa Fe • Mexicans welcomed trade as it boosted economy. • Soon, more and more Americans began settling around Santa Fe and American Manifest Destiny took over.
California’s Spanish culture • Spain created the Mission System in California. • 21 missions existed with around 20,000 Native Americans living on them. • California becomes a state in Mexico. • Mexicans built Ranchos and used Native Americans like slaves.
Manifest Destiny and California • Americans vastly outnumbered in CA, but began to see benefits of ownership. • John C. Fremont sent news back to east coast of CA’s abundant natural resources. • Two reasons for wanting California: • Open up trade on Pacific Ocean with China and Japan. • With oceans as borders instead of foreign nations, America would be safer.
President Polk plots for war • Offered Mexico money in exchange for CA. • When Mexico refused, Polk plotted to start a war. • Rio Grande vs. Nueces Rivers (Disputed boundary) • Final offer = $30 million and pay off Mexican debt. • NO DEAL!
War begins • Gen. Zachary Taylor (future President) leads troops into disputed territory. • Mexican troops attack an American fort. • “Hostilities may now be considered as commenced.”
Controversy over the start of war • Polk addressed Congress on May 11, 1846 saying Mexico had “invaded our territory and shed American blood on American soil.” • Congress passes declaration of war. • However, there was stiff opposition to the war • Democrats (Polk’s party) supported the war • Whigs opposed calling war aggressive and unjust • Congressman Abraham Lincoln called action unconstitutional, demanded to know exact spot where attack occurred. • Key issue was slave state vs. free state debate
PAIR SHARE • Discuss with your partner: • Was the war justified? • Do you support the Democrats and Manifest Destiny or the Whigs? • Be prepared to discuss your answer with the class!
Bear Flag Republic • June 1846, group of Californian Americans take over town of Sonoma. • Declare the Bear Flag Republic • Did not yet know war had been declared with Mexico. • A month later, US Navy ships seize San Francisco.
