Functional Polymer Surfaces Chemical and Life Science Engineering Kenneth J. Wynne, VCU CLSE, DMR-0207560 Andrew J. Lovinger, NSF Program Director Water makes it hydrophobic: 2wt% polymer surface modifier confers contraphilic wetting on conventional polyurethane. • New soft block yields surfaces that switch reversibly from hydrophilic (dry) to hydrophobic (wet) states. • Only 2wt% “blooms” to the surface (polymer surface modifier), making a conventional polyurethane surface contraphilic. • Mechanism: switched hydrogen bonding for soft block triads [2 semifluorinated and 1 hydantoin side chains]. • Contraphilic switching may prove useful in applications such as microfluidic devices for control of fluid streams. New soft block Left: Drop spreads (wets) dry surface. Right: Drop “beads up” on wet surface.
