  2. A little about me • My wife Robin and I just celebrated our 1st anniversary in June • We have two dogs that keep us busy • And one very fat cat Holly Marty Sidney

  3. A little about me • Graduated Burleson High School in 1998 • Earned my Bachelors degree at TCU in 2004 • This will be my 8th year teaching at Peaster.

  6. Interests • Most History Channel Programs • Fiction Novels • Medieval/Mesoamerican artifacts • College Football (primarily TCU) • NFL (Go Cowboys) • Travel (when possible)

Expectations • Taking Notes is Crucial! • NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASSROOM: Exception-Bottled Water. • NO GUM! • Assigned Homework is due by the START of class the following day. • When I am teaching the only thing on your desk should be your text, a spiral for taking notes, a pen or pencil and your “Gotcha” card • NO PURSES • NO CELL PHONES • NO EREADERS • NO LIBRARY BOOKS • NO HOMEWORK FOR OTHER CLASSES

  8. Expectations • Assignments are to be done in Dark Blue or Black Ink or Pencil ONLY! NO EXCEPTIONS. • Assignments are to be turned into the clear tray on my desk designated by your class period. • Make up work will be found in the black trays to the left of my clear trays. Picking up make up work is your responsibility. • Note: if you are gone for an extra-curricular event, YOU are responsible for swinging by to collect your assignment BEFORE you leave campus. The assignment is due at the START of the next class period I see you

  9. “Gotcha card” • An easy way for me to understand if you are keeping up with me is through this “Gotcha” card. • On a three by five index card I want you to color one side green and the other side red. • Any other decoration is up to you as long as I can clearly see one side is green the other red and I can clearly see it on your desk from wherever I am teaching from.

  10. “Gotcha Card” • As I am teaching if your card is on the green side, it is a visual cue letting me know “I got this, I understand what your saying” • If your card is flipped red I will know that you are not following me and I will change technique to try and help you understand. • However I cannot spend all day on one point, I will have to move on at some point. If this should happen I will come to you once I am finished with the lesson and work with you individually.

  11. Tardy Bell • As per School policy once the tardy bell rings I will close and lock my door. If you are tardy you will need to go to Mrs. Norris and get a tardy slip • The Tardy slip is your key back into the classroom. • In the event you are kept after by a teacher or administrator your tardy will be excused as long as you have a official pass from a teacher or administrator. • Three tardies in this class results in an unexcused absence and you loose your semester exam exemption status.

  12. Cell Phones • Unless we are doing an assignment using cell phones, they should never be out or even on. • If I see or hear a cell phone, even if its just the buzz from the vibration feature, I will take it up and it will go to my “Bank of Walker” • At the end of the period I will take the cell phone to the office where your parent/guardian will be the ONLY ones to collect them per School Policy.

Grading Policy • Grades are broken into two groups • Daily Work • Test Grades • Both account for 50% of you grade in this class, however there are also chapter quizzes that come after every two chapters we cover. These quiz grades count at two daily work grades and there is NO REVIEW for quizzes • You will need to study your notes and/or the text book to prepare for the quizzes.

  14. Grading Policy • There are only four test grades per grading period (occasionally a project will take the place of the three weeks test or as a fifth test grade) • Three Weeks Test • Six Weeks Test • Notebook Test • Current Event

  15. Late Work Policy • I will only accept late work ONE day after it is due. • If an assignment is late I automatically deduct 30 points from the assignment. Meaning the best you can get is a 70 at that point. • If an assignment is more than a day late I will not accept it and you will earn a zero for that assignment.

  16. Current Events • Most every Friday (depending on how holidays land) we will take time to see what is going on in the world as you will be required to present a current event. • You will need to present a Current Event once per grading period. • Economics: Business Article • Government: Political Article (not necessarily US politics) • World History: an Article from outside the United States

  17. Current Events • You will need to find an article online or in the newspaper about your subject area. • The article must be between 500-1000 words. Meaning about 1-3 pages if columns were spread out across the whole page. • You need to read and summarize the article on notebook paper and turn the in article to me. • You will then give a two-three minute presentation of your article to the rest of the class. • The assignment is not really about the “what” of the article, but more about “why is this important?” • This counts as a Test grade

  18. Cumulative Tests • The three and six weeks tests are cumulative even across grading periods. • Examples: • Economics: I may be near Christmas and we are in the heart of the Stock Market Project, but the tests may still ask you about supply and demand (2nd six weeks) • World History: We may be near the Thanksgiving break and I may be covering Feudal Japan, but the test may still ask you questions about Greece, Rome and Egypt • Government: It may be the middle of the 2nd grading period (six weeks) and were talking about Congress, but the test may have questions about the origins of government (chapter 1)

  19. Cumulative Tests • If you are in Government or Economics there will also be an essay portion on your exams. • These essays will pertain to what we are currently studying this grading period. • The essay portion will be given the Wednesday before the Three or Six Weeks Test and will account for 30% of the test grade

  20. Essay • When given an essay question a certain format must be followed. • Example: Compare and Contrast Socialism to Capitalism and determine which is the better economic philosophy. (3 MKP) • KP stands for Minimum Key Points that I am looking for in the Essay. • Three clearly distinct sections • Thesis (There must be a clear stance taken) • Body (the Key Points of the subject and an understanding of those points ) • Conclusion (restating the stance taken and supporting evidence given in the body)

  21. Notebook Test • Early in the last week of the grading period you will have a notebook test. • You will need to keep all assignments I have given back to you in a binder/folder of some sort. DO NOT just shove them in your book or backpack, that is how assignments get lost. • On the day of the Notebook test you will take out your notebooks and use them to take a simple 10 question test. • Example Question: How many questions were on Guided Reading 3-4?

  22. Book Check • You will need to have your book at all times • The book must be covered: If your book cover gets torn up and we do not have anymore, cover it with something. • Stretch book cover • Newspaper • Gift Wrap • Once a week, MOST weeks I will check your books to make sure they are covered and it’s the book you are supposed to have. Rarely is it the same day twice. • This counts as a daily grade.

  23. Hall Pass Policy • You are allowed six hall passes total a semester; they may be used in any order. • A hall pass can only be used with the teacher’s permission. • A hall pass may not be used during active instruction. • The teacher has the right to refuse a hall pass. • These passes may be used for any reason you need to leave the room. Exception: Nurse’s pass • An unused pass for the corresponding 6 week period will be used to drop the lowest grade • This is to be kept in your notebook the entire semester.

  24. Homework Passes • I will take homework passes issued to you by the school, however I will only take ONE per six weeks. • Homework passes can be used on any daily work except for quizzes and book check grades. • You may not use a Homework pass on a Test or project. • If I issue you Homework passes (via one of the review games we play) you may use as many of those as you like, as long as they have not expired.

  25. DO NOT ask “Can we see our three/six weeks grade?” You will wait until the report cards are printed.
