Size of the Great Barrier Reef • The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living organism in the world! • Stretching 2600 kilometres (1615.5 miles), this natural icon is so large it can even be seen from outer space! • The Great Barrier Reef covers an overall area that is larger than the size of Italy!

  10. A Home • While it’s known mostly for its large maze of colorful reefs, its complex architecture also provides a home for a huge number of plants and animals.

  11. Biodiversity • The Great Barrier Reef is internationally recognized for its outstanding biodiversity • What does biodiversity mean?

  12. Biodiversity • This means that the Great Barrier Reef is famous for having a lot of different species and habitats • It encompasses all living things, from microbes and single cell algae to marine turtles and whales, and their habitats

Biodiversity • The breathtaking array of marine creatures includes: • 1625 species of fish • 1400 coral reef species • More than 3000 species of mollusks (shells) • 630 species of echinoderm (starfish, sea urchins) • 500 species of worms • 14 breeding species of sea snakes • More than 100 species of jellyfish • 215 species of birds including 22 species of seabirds and 32 species of shorebirds • Six of the world's seven species of marine turtles • 30 species of whales and dolphins • One of the world's most important dugong populations • 133 species of sharks and rays • And much more that still hasn’t been discovered yet!

  14. Dugong • They look like a cross between a dolphin and a manatee • It is the world’s only marine mammal herbivore! • They are known as the “sea cow”

Corals • The amazing collection of coral on the Great Barrier Reef is responsible for many of the bright and beautiful colors that this natural icon is internationally known for • Despite looking like plants, these corals are actually colonies of very small animals called coral polyps which are closely related to jellyfish • There are two main types of corals — hard and soft.
