Alcohol 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 states: "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, who you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."
Alcohol • Drug that depresses the brain and nervous system. (depressant) • Ethanol is the powerful and addictive drug. It is produced synthetically and naturally through fermenting fruits, vegetables, and grains. • Alcohol is made by fermentation • Fermentation is the process in which yeast, sugar, and water are combined to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide.
Beer • Made by fermenting barley, corn, or rye • Most beers are about 4% alcohol • Malt liquor is beer that has a higher alcohol content than regular beer • Light beer is beer that has fewer calories than regular beer but the same alcohol content
Wine • Made by fermenting grapes or other fruits • Most wines are about 12-14 percent alcohol • Wine coolers are a carbonated, fruit flavored alcoholic beverage that is 1.5 to 6% alcohol.
Liquor • Made by distillation • Process that uses a fermented mixture to obtain an alcoholic beverage with a high alcohol content. • Whiskey, bourbon, rum, gin, vodka, and tequila • Most liquors are about 40% alcohol
Proof • Measure of the amount of alcohol in a beverage • The proof of a beverage is double the percent of alcohol in the beverage • An alcohol beverage with 20 percent alcohol is 40 proof
How Alcohol Enters the Body • Intoxication is the state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol or another substance and the person’s physical and mental control is significantly reduced. • Alcohol is absorbed through the bloodstream- about 20% through the walls of the stomach • Majority of the rest is absorbed through the small intestine • Alcohol not absorbed through the bloodstream is excreted through the urine, perspiration or breath
The Path of Alcohol in the body • Mouth: alcohol enters the body. • Stomach: some alcohol gets into the bloodstream in the stomach, but most goes on to the small intestine. • Small Intestine: alcohol enters the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine. • Heart: pumps alcohol throughout the body. • Brain: alcohol reaches the brain. • Liver: alcohol is oxidized by the liver at a rate of about 0.5 oz per hour. • Alcohol is converted into water, carbon dioxide and energy
Effects of Alcohol • One drink per hour can be processed by the liver. • When you have multiple drinks the liver cannot break it down causing the alcohol to go into the body tissue before being excreted. • An alcoholic beverage that contains about one-half ounce of alcohol is considered one drink • One can of beer is 4 to 5 ounces of wine or one mixed drink
Effects of Alcohol • Alcohol is a toxin. If too much alcohol is swallowed, the stomach will reject it, causing someone to throw up • When someone drinks heavily the night before, they may wake up still feeling “drunk” • There is no way to speed up alcohol through your system.
Blood Alcohol Level • As the alcohol in the blood increases, the effects of alcohol intensifies • Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is the amount of alcohol in a person’s blood. • BAC is given as a percentage • The higher the BAC, the greater the effects of alcohol on the body
Factors that Effect the BAC • Amount of alcohol consumed • Speed at which the alcohol is consumed • Body weight • Percentage of body fate • Gender- BAC faster in females • Feelings • Amount of food eaten • Presence of other drugs in your bloodstream • Drinking carbonated alcoholic beverages
BAC Levels **BAC levels are based on a 140lb. Woman in one hour. • BAC .02 • One 12 oz. Beer • People feel relaxed, become talkative, thinking and decision making abilities may be impaired • BAC .05 • two to three 12 oz. beers • Areas of the brain that control reasoning and judgments are impaired. Reaction time is slower.
BAC Levels continued • BAC .08-.10 (legally drunk) • Four to five 12 oz. beers • Reasoning, judgment, self-control, muscular coordination and reaction time are seriously impaired. Slurred speech and walk with a stagger • BAC .12 • six 12 oz. beers • Become confused, disoriented, loss of coordination and balance; may vomit
BAC Levels continued • BAC .20 • Seven to eight 12 oz. beers • Emotions are unpredictable and may change rapidly; may pass out • BAC .30 • Nine to ten 12 oz. beers • Have little or no control over their minds and bodies- can not stay awake • BAC .40 • Eleven to twelve 12 oz. beers • People are likely to be unconscious. Breathing and heartbeat slow down, death can occur • BAC .50 • Thirteen to fourteen 12 oz. beers • People may enter a deep coma and die
Effects of Alcohol on the Body • Immune System • Depresses the function of the immune system • Lowers the infection fighting cells in the body • Nervous System • Impairs brain • Can cause blackouts and seizures • Dementia
Effects of Alcohol on the Body • Digestive System • Increasing the risk of developing cancers: • mouth, esophagus, and stomach • Stimulates the secretion of stomach acids and injuries the inner lining of the stomach and causes ulcers: • Open sore on the skin or on a mucous membrane • Developing liver disease • Liver becomes enlarged with fatty tissue • Develop alcoholic hepatitis: liver swells • Cirrhosis: chronic damage to liver cells
Effects of Alcohol on the Body • Cardiovascular System • Increase risk of developing CVD, high blood pressure, stroke • Skeletal System • Body loses calcium (osteoporosis) • Urinary System • Heavy drinking can cause kidney failure • Reproductive System • Can delay the first menstrual cycle; irregular periods • Can affect the size of the testes and the development of muscle mass
