Potawatomi Native Americans

2. Location and Name of Tribe • The Potawatomi tribe lived the eastern wood lands and the upper part of the Mississippi River. The name of the tribe is Potawatomi and the three fires.

3. Food • Some of the foods the Potawatomi tribe ate were corn, syrup, fish, and wild rice. They hunted and went fishing some of the things they hunted were deer and other wild animals they also ate elk. Squash (left side) wild rice (right side) Nuts (left side) masher (right side)

4. Housing The Potawatomi tribe lived in dome shaped huts called wig-wams. They built there huts along the side of the river. The huts were made out of wood and logs. Potawatomi villages include Meat Drying huts, a ball field and a Sweat house.

5. Clothing • The tribe traded with the French for European clothes. Women wore dresses with porcupine quills. Men wore deer skin, breech cloth, leggings, and fringed skirts. The Potawatomi tribe also wore blouses and jackets with fancy beadwork and ribbons.

6. Story beliefs • Turtle gets a shell is one of the stories the Native Americans parents told to there children. It stars a ordinary turtle that does not have a shell. The reason the turtle does not have a shell is because it was never created. One day an old man came up to the turtle and stepped on him. For doing that the man wanted to give the turtle a gift. So he dove down to the bottom of the river and got a shell. “Here is your shell. If any one comes and threatens you just go under your shell.”

7. The European Impact • The Europeans were visitors to the great lakes area before A.D. 1500s. They believe in Christianity.
