Scarab Beetle • An ancient Egyptian insect is the scarab beetle. It’s the most famous. • The scarab beetle was an important amulet worn by ancient Egyptians. • The ancient Egyptians thought that scarabs were associated with the god, Khepri. • The scarab beetle became an ancient Egyptian symbol for rebirth (that means the ability to be reborn). • When the ancient Egyptians mummified a body, they would remove a heart and put a stone-carved scarab beetle in its place.
Dogs • Some dogs were mummified near women, archers, and dwarves. • Bones of domesticated dogs have been found. • The ancient Egyptian word for dog is “iwiw,” pronounced “eewe.” • Some of the dogs in ancient Egypt were the pharaoh hound and the greyhound. Pharaoh Hound Greyhound
Cats • In ancient Egypt, cats were considered sacred. • Cats were protected by people and laws. • If you hurt a cat either accidentally or purposely, your punishment would be death. • Cats were alive in 3,000 B.C. • Cats could be goddesses in ancient Egypt. • A popular Egyptian cat is the Mau. It is pronounced “mow.” • The Mau may be naturally spotted with fancy and elegant features.
