Historical Measurement • Measurement started with items common to man such as a hand length, an arms length, the length of a foot or many other common items. These proved to be inadequate.
Steel Rule • Is a metal ruler • Used for accurate measurements • Can be used as guides for laying out lines • Rigid steel rules can be used when cutting straight lines.
Try Square • A straight edge ruler and a beam or stock piece that are joined together at a 90˚ angle • Used for • layout lines perpendicular to an edge/side • Check that a board is square • Check a board’s flatness • If a try square is dropped it may become inaccurate (not square.
Combination Square • Consists of: • Blade – steel rule • Square head • Center head • Protractor head • Used like a try square • Layout angles • Find the center of round stock (center head) • Measure the depth of a hole
Carpenters Square • Used to • measure boards • Testing corners • Laying out various angles • 2 measuring blades are set at 90˚ • This tool can be inaccurate if dropped…but can be reset.
Sliding T-Bevel • The blade on the T-Bevel is movable • It can be set at any angle between 0˚ and 180˚ • The locking screw secures the blade in place. • You can use various other tools to set the angle and then test your pieces to see if the angle matches.
Trammel Points • Accurately measure and mark long distances • Transfer arcs and circles
Compass • Tools used to draw arcs and circles • One point stays stationary (point), while the other end draws the arc (pencil)
French Curve • Used to smooth arcs or making the transition from an arc to a straight line • Layout curves and other designs
Measuring Tape • A flexible form of a ruler (metal strip) • Self-retracting coiled measuring tool • Tip moves slightly to allow for accurate inside or outside measurements
Chalk Line • Allows you to draw a straight line over a long distance. • String and chalk is contained in the body of the tool • You pull the line tight and snap it. The result is a chalk line.
Your Task… • Find an uncommon tool used in the woodworking shop. • Create 2 posters for the tool: • Create a fake name and use for the tool • Indicate the real name and use for the tool.
