The challenge of mental health • Worldwide – (WHO) est. 1 in 4 will be affected by mental illness during life • 9% adults in Wales currently treated for any mental illness (WHS) • Personal costs • Costs to society of over £3.7bn per year (HSE) • Mental health ‘literacy’
Mental health promotion • Proactively promoting good health and wellbeing • Mental health status • Protective factors – positive effect • Risk factors – negative effect • Enhance protective factors/reduce risk factors
Why is this relevant to the network? • Network aims – • reduce health inequalities through employment • Share good practice in promoting health in the workplace • Link to government policy objectives in employment • Employment a key setting for health promotion (inc. mental HP)
Assembly Government action • Policies – • Designed for Life • Health Challenge Wales • Adult mental health services NSF ‘ Raising the Standard’, Standard 1: • actively promote good mental health for all • tackle stigma relating to MH • promote social inclusion of those with MH problems • Commitment to develop MHP action plan

Targeted at those already suffering from (or at high risk of mental ill health Mental health specific, but more widely targeted at general population Not mental health specific, but significantly contribute to improving mental health • Healthy Minds at Work • Stress Standards (HSE Programme) • Corporate Health Standard • Health Work and Wellbeing Strategy (joint DWP/DoH/HSE) • Want to Work (Joint jobcentre Plus/Assembly Government Programme) • Pathways to Work (DWP Programme) • ‘Welsh Backs’ • New Deal for Disabled People (DWP programme) • Workplace Health Connect (HSE programme) Workplace employment and economic activity
Workplace employment and economic activity (cont) • Proposed actions: • Develop employers’ information pack on best practice in dealing with MH in the workplace • Include in Corporate Health Standard (CHS) req. at gold level and above to promote MH in the workplace • Support all public bodies in Wales in attaining CHS with target of platinum level • Develop CHS SME programme
Monitoring improvement • The Assembly Government have developed evidence based indicators of social determinants for common mental health disorders • UK level research on population level indicators is underway which will also be used to measure progress with the plan
Mental health promotion action plan? • Bit of a dull title? • Open to suggestions! • Consultation document will be published by Summer this year
