ONE-to-ONE Relational Meeting Defined A natural but uncommon conversation with someone you want to know (or know better), about their values, vision, life and motivations.
ONE-to-ONE Goals connect with people in your community learn ways you can walk with people in their daily lives …living out Jesus’ commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself”
ONE-to-ONE Objectives to build a relationship to uncover person’s values, vision, life, motivations, passions, etc. to help person gain some clarity about his/her own life to find partners for future opportunity to gain information
One-to-Ones in TM 2.0 • We learn the hopes, needs, and dreams of people from our congregation and community context • We are attentive to themes, issues, & concerns revealed through the conversations • This information will inform the evolving purpose and missional plan of the congregation
Biblical Grounding • Paul & Barnabas • Paul & Onesimus • Paul & Lydia • Jesus & the woman at the well • Jesus & Zacchaeus • Moses & Aaron • Ruth & Naomi • Esther & Mordecai • Samuel & Eli • God & Jonah • Mary & Elizabeth • Paul & Timothy
Jesus interacted with people wherever he went Jesus engaged people and taught his disciples in and through those interactions
Getting Started • Pray • Discern who you are called to engage in One-to-One conversation • Schedule a meeting • Identify the most helpful questions • Be open to where the Spirit & conversation lead
The One-to-One Conversation Listen actively Display genuine curiosity and concern Pay attention to cues: body language, intonation, and setting Probe with open-ended questions: “Tell me more about” or “what was that like?” Withhold judgment If appropriate, ask if you can pray for the person Take notes afterward
WHY SHOULD I (WE) CARE ABOUT THESE THINGS? “God has given us the task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. This is the wonderful message he has given us to tell others.” 2 Cor 5:18-19 Msg “We are well known by God, and I hope that in your heart we are well known by you as well.” 2 Cor 5:11b CEV
We participate in God’s reconciling mission by first listening to what most needs to be reconciled We don’t know where any conversation will lead We listen for God speaking to us in conversation with our neighbors Intentional encounters help us identify what needs/partners are in our congregation & community
