Lawrence • Was assigned to the British Army in Cairo • 1916 – became a liaison officer to join the Great Arab Revolt (used guerilla tactics) • Was actively involved in the attack at Agaba by Prince Feisaland WON! • Returned to London to present Arab’s POV • As an act of protest, refused to accept medals from the King

Lawrence • witnessed how the Arabs were ignored by Western Leaders concerning about France taking custody of Syria at the Paris Peace Conference = NOT GOOD! • Lowell Thomas presented a lecture and made Lawrence a celebrity (in a good way) • Got sent back to the serve the British government by Churchill in 1920 • Retired and wrote his memoir The 7 Pillars of Wisdom • Decided to be anonymous

Lawrence became happy. • decided to be anonymous by changing his name to John Hume Ross and Thomas Edward Shaw • in 1935 left service and planned an early retirement • Died in a motorcycle accident
Anti-Comintern Pact • protect the common interests of both Japan and Germany against the armed pressure exerted by the Soviet Union • Germany and Japan both wanted to expand but had problems with Russia • the pact was handled by Joachim von Rippentrop • RESULT: Japan was granted more freedom to around and take territory in China
GERMAN and JAPANESE SIDES • GERMAN: never given a chance to take control and develop an empire like the rest of the western nations • JAPANESE: was left alone in the east -was forced to watch as the western nations took control of its surrounding nations and left with nothing to colonize except China when Japan was starting to expand in China, Russia provided resistance (supporting their Communist partners), thus ending the frienship between Japan and Russia.
Sputnik 1 • World’s first artificial satellite • Launched on Oct. 4, 1957 • Marked the space age • Started the space race between US and USSR • caught the world's attention and the American public off-guard • Scared the public because of missile threats and nuclear attacks
