Chaplain’s • Two Main Topics: • Emotional Cycle of Deployment • 2. Post Combat/Operational Stress • Will identify resources for you • You should have handouts already
EMOTIONAL CYCLE OF DEPLOYMENT • Stage One: Anticipating the Loss • Stage Two: Detachment and Withdrawal • Stage Three: Emotional Disorganization • Stage Four: Recovery and Stabilization • Stage Five: Anticipation of Homecoming • Stage Six: Renegotiation of the Roles • Stage Seven: Reintegration & Stabilization Conceptual framework from Logan, Kathleen V., “The Emotional Cycle of Deployment”, Proceedings, February 1987
STAGE FIVE-ANTICIPATING OF HOMECOMING • Every deployment has an ending! • Starts about six weeks before end of deployment • Lots of activity (new dress, spruce up yard, haircuts) • Tension builds • Individual and family changes • Expectations • Changes vs. stayed the same • Prepare children • Preparation to become a couple/family again
STAGE SIX-REUNION • Overcoming jet lag—1 day for every time zone / hr • Becoming a couple/family • Reunion day to 6 weeks • Strangers when we meet-intimacy grows • Different strokes for different folks • “Hold” the family reunion please • Time alone and time together • Quiet time / noisy time • “I’m on the outside looking in” • Resuming the marital and parental roles • Responding to changes • Hey Mom/Dad I grew up! • Negotiating changes in the marital and parenting roles • Goal is not to have a PERFECT reunion, • but a GOOD reunion—achievable for everyone

COMBAT / OPERATION STRESS BROCHURE • STRESS IS PART OF NAVY/MARINE CORPS LIFE • ‘IN THEATER’ STRESSES ARE NOT ONLY DUE TO ACTUAL COMBAT, BUT ALSO DUE TO CHALLENGES OF: • IT ALL ADDS UP! • Working where there is potential danger • Working in uncomfortable conditions (heat, cold) • Working long hours every day for months (lack of sleep) • “Groundhog Day” syndrome • (drab colors, same people, same place, same routine…) • Knowing your mistake can cost someone their life • Loss/significant injury of fellow Marine/Sailor
Challengesfor Servicemembers Returning to Garrison and Home Life • Giving up the security of being surrounded by their buddies 24/7 • Giving up the security of being armed 24/7 • Learning that trash on the roadside back home is not going to explode as you drive by • Learning, not just in your head but in your heart, that people on the street do not want to kill you • Learning to adjust to the slower pace and lower excitement level of life at home • Relearning how to be around others without swearing or being offensive • Learning how to do the things you miss (like drinking, driving, or sex) in safe moderation • Figuring out how much to tell family and friends
COMBAT / OPERATION STRESS BROCHURE CONT • ADVERSE STRESS REACTIONS:(see brochure list) • CAN HAPPEN EVEN WITH EXPERIENCED WARRIORS • CAN HAPPEN AS A RESULT OF MULTIPLE WARTIME DEPLOYMENTS • DO NOT MEAN YOUR MARINE/SAILOR IS WEAK • USUALLY DIMINISH QUICKLY—WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OR A COUPLE OF MONTHS. • CAN ALSO LINGER OR WORSEN… • IF STUCK, GET HELP (see brochure for suggestions)
DON’T WORRY, HAVE FAITH! “Courage is fear that has said its prayers.” Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. (Philippians 4:6 The Living Bible)
Brief Prayer for Safe Returns and Happy Reunions
