Background Information • Born January 30, 1882 in New York. • Very big admirer of his fifth cousin Theodore Roosevelt the 26th President of the United States. • Attended Harvard University and Columbia Law School. • Married his wife Eleanor on St. Patrick’s Day in 1905. • Was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for President Wilson. • In 1921 he was struck with the Polio disease which left him crippled in his legs. • Was the Governor of New York in 1928. • Was the 32nd President of the Unites States of America.

  3. Election • Ran for President in 1932 against Herbert Hoover. • Inaugurated on March 4, 1933 • Entered in to his presidency during the height of the Great Depression. • Held 472 Electoral Votes out 531 possible votes.

  4. Cabinet in 1933 • Vice President: John Nance Garner (served two terms) • Secretary of State: Cordell Hull • Secretary of Treasury: William H. Woodin • Secretary of War: George H. Dern • Attorney General: Homer S. Cummings

Significant Information • Responsible for: • The First Hundred Days. • The Tennessee Valley Authority • Public Works Administration • The Agriculture Adjustments Administration • All aimed at boosting the economy and were part of the “New Deal”. • Conducted “fire side chats” • After signs of recovery he introduced the “Second New Deal” • Social Security Act and the Works Progress Administration.

Most Known For • Creating and implementing the New Deal. • Only President to serve more than two terms ( he served four). • President during World War Two. • Pearl Harbor • The Lend-Lease Act of 1941, allowed the United States to provide Great Britain with food, and ammunition. • On December 8th 1941 asked Congress to declare War on Japan. • Helped in creating the United Nations and coined the name of the league. • FDR knew that the dealing between the United States and Russia depended on future peace for the world. Franklin Delanor Roosevelt devoted a tremendous amount of his time to the United Nations.

  9. Interesting Fact • President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed a bill officially establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. • “In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt departed from tradition by declaring November 23, the next to last Thursday that year, as Thanksgiving Day. Considerable controversy surrounded this deviation, and some Americans refused to honor Roosevelt's declaration. For the next two years, Roosevelt repeated the unpopular proclamation, but on November 26, 1941, he admitted his mistake and signed a bill into law officially making the fourth Thursday in November the national holiday of Thanksgiving Day.” • George Washington was the first president to acknowledge Thanksgiving as a holiday however he proclaimed it on a Tuesday. • Abraham Lincoln was the first President to declare it a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Thursday of the month in 1863.

FDR Park • In Fairmount Park in Philadelphia there is a section named after FDR. • This section is a major bird watching area and golf, tennis, softball, tennis, rugby and baseball. • Known to many south Philadelphians as “ The Lakes” • Originally constructed in 1914, known then as League Island Park. • In 1926 hosted the countries 150th birthday known as the Sesquicentennial Exposition

  14. Franklin Delano Roosevelt • Died April 12, 1945 in office of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was succeeded by Harry S. Truman, vice president during Roosevelt’s last term in office.
