  2. Create Your Own Title Page • Create an original movie poster for your film as a title page. Use the movie title in an original font style on a creatively designed front cover page. Choose one line from the movie as a tag-line. Compose a short blurb with you as critic. • Do not just use a current movie poster design for your film. MINORITY REPORT

  3. Plot Development • Plot outline – create a flow chart describing the main plot and sub-plots in the film. • Indicate the main conflict and problems, the complications of rising action, turning points and climax, and falling action of the story-line. • (Your chart should include 12-15 boxes.)

  7. “What if?” Scenario • In a paragraph or two, describe the main “what if” scenarios that the science fiction of the film is based on. MINORITY REPORT

  8. MINORITY REPORT “What ifs?” • What if all major crimes (especially murders) could be prevented by using psychics who could predetermine criminal actions and prevent them? • If so, all criminals could be electronically incarcerated and held in suspended containment indefinitely. No murders would ever occur, but people would be imprisoned for crimes they have not yet committed. • A special Precrime police unit was created utilizing all new technology to help maintain the system.

  9. MINORITY REPORT “What ifs?” Precogs • What if psychics could be plugged into society in order to predict crimes like murder before they occur? They would be have to be on duty for society 24/7, existing solely for the good of society without any personal freedom. Biometrics • What if all citizens could be identified from afar via eye scans? Wherever anyone goes, they would be recognized so you could never be anonymous in public.

  10. Sci-Fi Setting • Describe the main sci-fi settings of the film both in time and place. • Also consider what moods or atmospheres that are created by the setting. • What makes the setting an effective one for this story? MINORITY REPORT

  11. Sci-Fi Settings MINORITY REPORT In Washington D.C. 2054, police have the power to arrest you for murders you are thinking of committing. Cars move quickly on wild “hot-wheel track” highways, where they can hover, dip and dive through the city. The inner city appears to look much like it did in the 20th century, however since tenement apartments and city streets look unmodern. Meanwhile the wealthy appear to have very contemporary housing with new gadgets like holographic video players. This would be appropriate because the poor appear to be well controlled and the wealthy have all the benefits of modern technology as in many dystopian societies.

  12. Sci-Fi Settings MINORITY REPORT The shopping malls of the future look much like today except for hi-tech advertisements that are personalized for the customer. It appears to be a high impact consumer society where ads and electronic billboards are aimed at the buyer everywhere. Again, it appears that big business sales interests of major companies run the show in the future. Everyone is just a cog in the wheel of consumer culture and Precrime fits into the right wing capitalist interests of the world, protecting society, not the rights of the individual.

  13. Sci-Fi Settings Cars & Highways MINORITY REPORT Cars are sleek, dynamic hover vehicles that can move quickly through city traffic. Built for speed, cars (like this Lexus) are able to maneuver through dense traffic effortlessly. In addition, vehicles move elevator-like up and down the edge of huge sky-scrapers or across super fast hot-wheel track highways transporting passengers throughout the city.

  14. Character sketches • Provide character dossiers for the main characters in the story (2 or 3). • These should be like a personnel file on the characters. • Include photos and brief descriptions of the characters’ backgrounds and their roles in the plot. MINORITY REPORT

  15. Characters - John Anderton Detective John Anderton heads the Precrime unit in Washington. Intelligent and proud, John is initially stubborn in his protection of the Precrime program, insisting on its infallibility and usefulness. Due to his own son’s mysterious disappearance and presumed murder many years ago, he is confident that Precrime is necessary to protect citizens. Ambitious and determined, he wages battle against Witwer’s investigation until he is accused of premurder by his own system. Anderton is able to utilize his own confidence and determination to seek out the problem, defending himself from capture of his own police agency, in order to try to get to the bottom of the issue of his own criminal investigation. MINORITY REPORT

  16. Characters - Danny Witwer Detective Danny Witwer has been assigned to investigate Precrime’s success and the possibilities of mistakes or other problems. Confident and determined to carry out his mission, he is mistrusted by Anderton, who assumes Witwer is out to sabotage the system. Aloof and efficient, Witwer appears to be the villain in the plot early on. Yet he is also very intelligent and perceptive, posing questions must be asked about the effectiveness of a system that presupposes guilt. Witwer is also stubborn in his pursuit of both the truth about Precrime, and ultimately of Anderton himself. MINORITY REPORT

  17. Characters - Lamar Burgess Dr. Lamar Burgess is one of the co-founders (with Dr. Iris Hineman) of Precrime. As such he will do almost anything to protect its existence. This sinister politician is sneaky and charming in his father-like relationship with Anderton, pretending to be his friend and protector. Authoritative and untrustworthy, Burgess will resort to anything including murder to achieve his objective. The murder of Anne Lively was orchestrated to maintain control over the precogs that his precrime program depends upon. MINORITY REPORT

  18. Thematic Journal • Explain the main message or lesson that the film presents to the audience by creating an imaginary journal of 1 or 2 pages from the perspective of a character in the movie. • Refer to events in the story to show how the theme is presented. MINORITY REPORT

  19. Thematic Journal (Anderton) What have I done? Why did that oaf Witwer have to come poking his nose into everything? Now he’s discovered my drug addiction -- well not addiction -- it just helps me get through the pain. How would he know how I feel. After all, has his kid been kidnapped and murdered right from under his nose? Now I have to find a way to get that big ape off my back....... And now I’ve been accused of precrime murder-- and a Brown Ball on top of it! First degree, premeditated murder! Someone has set me up, but who? Witwer? Why would he? I’ve got to run from my own unit and get to the bottom of this. MINORITY REPORT

  20. MINORITY REPORT How can I be accused of murdered? There has to be some mistake. I’m the leader, the champion of Precrime, not a criminal myself. I don’t even know this Leo Crowe, so why would I kill him? Iris Hineman’s description of a “minority report” sure has me thinking now. If I know about the future, can’t I choose to change it? Surely I now have the freewill to alter the future. I’ll just make sure that I never act on the impulse to kill if I ever do run into him. Oh God, how many people have I sent to the oblivion of Gideon’s containment cells who could have made the same choice? Anderton’s Journal

  21. MINORITY REPORT “That which keeps us safe, can also make us free”?

  22. Creative Response • Create a brochure for one main element of the science or technology in the film. • It can take the form of a product brochure, travel brochure or information about the scientific or technological basis of the film. MINORITY REPORT

  23. PRECRIME PRECRIME - The Ultimate Weapon in Crime Prevention “Oh, I’m so mad I could just kill that man!” Don’t even think about it! Clairvoyant precogs will recognize your deepest inner thoughts and send you on life-long journey into suspended oblivion. Precrime prevents crime. Stops murder cold! Imagine a world without murder. Can you see? Precrime sees all.

  24. PRECRIME PRECRIME - The Ultimate Weapon in Crime Prevention Precogs - How Precrime Works. Precrime works on the principal of “Precogs” (Precognitives) who are kept vigilant in the temple pool and who are able to foresee the future whenever the fabric of society is torn by a violent act, like murder. The 3 Precogs, Dashiel, Arthur and Agatha (named after mystery writers), float around in milky brine that works as a conductor of the collective social consciousness. They interpret what they perceive and project it on Precrime screens.

  25. PRECRIME PRECRIME - The Ultimate Weapon in Crime Prevention PRECRIME- police protection through crime prevention. Chief Detective John Anderton investigates a Precrime potential murder. Within one year Precrime eliminated murder in Washington D.C. Once the Precogs predict a murder, the Precrime computer releases a wooden ball with the victim and suspect names, along with visual images upon the glass plate screens to cue police investigations. The police pinpoint the time and location of the crime and pick up the suspect.

  26. PRECRIME Police Technology: Eye Scans Police can send electronic spiders into buildings to seek and indentify suspects based on eye-scan technology. Search warrants seem to supercede the rights of individuals as the new technology can be utilized safely anywhere. Biometrics identification has become the norm, as everyone is identified via eye-scan technology, and security devices also use eye recognition. Even advertisements in malls can identify and personalize their commercials for individuals in public.

  27. PRECRIME PreCrime Technology Police squads from the Precrime unit can ascend upon any location via their giant flying discs that can surround a location. In addition, Precrime police are equipped with jetpacks to pursue suspects anywhere.

  28. PRECRIME EVERYONE RUNS. EVERYONE GETS CAUGHT!
