The Concept….introducing the HXR-MC1P • An HD mini-cam to complete Sony’s HD acquisition products by offering Full HD camera acqusition where a compact or shoulder camcorder is simply impractical. • A separate camera unit and control unit, connected with a 2.8m cable. (remote control capable) • Shooting, recording, playing and control all done in this single product (an all-in-one solution)

HXR-MC1P – Codec Details New! • Sony is implementing the AVCHD codec in the HXR-MC1P. • AVCHD is a codec developed by Sony and Panasonic which is currently implemented by Sony in the consumer Handycam market. • AVCHD is based on MPEG-4/H.264 technology . • AVCHD is ideal for the HXR-MC1P due to the small size and long recording time required for these applications. • Memory Stick was chosen over SxS PRO and CF to maintain this compact size requirement. • Offering high quality images with low-bit rates and long recording time (selectable up to 16Mbps) • The HXR-MC1P also offers SD recording via MPEG-2 SD codec.

10. HXR-MC1P – Codec Context New! • The HXR-MC1P uses AVCHD for HD recording. AVCHD is a Long GOP codec. • Long GOP compression offers significant benefits in terms of picture quality, recording-duration and cost per minute of storage. • Long GOP compression has been central to Sony’s content creation offering for many years. • How does the HXR-MC1P fit in with current product line ups? • Consumer / Pro-sumer Products e.g. HDRTG3 and HXR-MC1P. • 16Mbps AVCHD recording, no features specifically designed for professionals, limited availability of native NLE editors at present. • Entry Level Professional Products – HDV range. • 25Mbps MPEG-2 Long GOP with 4:2:0 recording, full range of professional features, full NLE support. • Professional Products – XDCAM EX. • Up to 35Mbps MPEG-2 Long GOP with 4:2:0 recording with full 1920 x 1080 acquisition and full NLE support. • High-End Professional Products – XDCAM HD422. • 50Mbps MPEG-2 Long GOP for optimum picture quality with 4:2:2 recording, 1920 x 1080 acquisition and growing NLE support.

15. Other Ways to Edit AVCHD • Editing AVCHD files using NLE software consumes a lot of CPU power and will be time consuming. • Converting an AVCHD file into a intermediate codec will use a lot of HDD space (approx. 6 times more data). • So one option is to use an HDMI/HD-SDI converter and import the footage to a PC or a VTR.-> Then use the material in your usual HD-SDI system. (not shown) • Convert it into HDV or XDCAM EX, and edit as HDV or EX material.-> Then use the standard HDV/EX workflow. (as below) HDMI HD-SDI NLE for HDV/EX editing

17. Benefits of a split head model • Shots which cannot be achieved with a ordinary hand-held camcorder can be achieved with the HXR-MC1P. Why is this? Because the camera head is split from the recorder unit. • Wherever the camera head is positioned, e.g. on a helmet facing to the rear, the camera operator can check the camera settings and the picture framing on the control unit’s LCD screen. • The risk of missing that vital shot is reduced! • So the potential need to re-shoot certain scenes is reduced! A good example of a situation where it is difficult to shoot with an ordinary handycam.
