  1. Geopolitics and the race for World Domination Imperialism in other parts of the world

  2. Ottoman Empire • Colonizers had taken all the land possible in Africa and were looking for new places to colonize. • The Ottoman Empire had struggled with modernizing and leadership since the 1500’s. • Greece gained independence and Serbia gained self-rule in 1830. • Europeans saw the Ottomans weakness and intended to exploit it.

  3. Ottoman Empire 1359 and 1566

  4. Ottoman Empire Territorial losses to 1800

  5. Ottoman Empire Decline to 1914

  6. Ottoman Empire • What is the importance of the location of the Ottoman Empire? • Why were the Europeans interested in lands from the Ottomans?

  7. Crimea and the Crimean War • Russia was interested in gaining access to a warm water port in the Black Sea. • Britain and France were interested in keeping Russia from gaining any more Ottoman lands. • Russia and the Ottoman Empire went to war and even with the help of Britain and France the Ottoman Empire lost.

  8. Geopolitics—What does this mean?

  9. The Great Game • India was one of the most profitable colonies for Great Britain. • Russia wanted access to the resources in India • Afghanistan is located centrally between India and Russia so most of the “battle” took place there. • 1881 Britain withdraws from Afghanistan • 1921 Britain agrees not to extend into Afghanistan, USSR signs non-aggression pact

  10. Look at the map of India and Afghanistan • Why is Afghanistan important to Britain? • Why is Afghanistan important to Russia? • Do you think that this “Great Game” had any lasting impact on Afghanistan? • FYI: There is NO oil yet, that is a good answer, but not yet!

  11. Egypt • Muhammad Ali was sent by Ottomans to control Egypt but he soon broke away. • Ali insisted on reform in military and agriculture. • Switched from food crops to Cotton. • Great for business, bad for peasants. • Suez Canal was a human made water-way that connected the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

  13. Satellite Shot

  14. Suez Canal • What is the significance of the location of the Suez Canal? • It connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea • It was built with loans from the French and private interests. • This means the loans had to be repaid. • What happened when Egypt could no longer pay back the debt? • Britain decided to help them by taking over control of the canal. (How nice!)

  15. Panama Canal

  16. Panama Canal • Who did the Panama Canal benefit? • The people of Panama • The United States • Brazil • California

  17. India • India is the most valuable of all the British colonies. • SEPOY MUTINY—Gossip spread that the new grease for their guns would be beef or pork fat. • To use cartridges the soldiers (Sepoy) had to bite off the end of the cartridge. • Why does this matter?

  18. India • The Sepoy Mutiny created racism and distrust between the Indians and British. • Nationalist groups form. • Indian National Congress in 1885 • Muslim League in 1906 • By 1900 these groups were calling for independence.

  19. Southeast Asia/Pacific • What country colonized Burma? • What country colonized Vietnam? • What country colonized Thailand? • What was Thailand called in 1895?

  20. The United States role • As a result of the Spanish-American war the United States acquired the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. • Filipino people were not happy to just switch colonial powers and fought for independence. • The United States helped the Philippines by building roads, schools, railroads and hospitals.

  21. Hawaii • By the mid-19th century American sugar plantations accounted for 75% of Hawaii's economy. • Hawaiian sugar had been cheaper than sugar from other areas but in 1890 the McKinley Tariff Act made all sugar tax free. • This caused sugar plantation owners in Hawaii to push for annexation to the US.

  22. Hawaii • In 1893 the Hawaiian monarch was thrown out of power. • 1894 an American plantation owner became the president of the new republic of Hawaii. • 1898 the United States annexed Hawaii.

  23. Review • Africa—lands claimed so European countries start to look for lands elsewhere. • Ottoman Empire loses power and loses strategic lands. • Egypt builds Suez Canal and Britain takes over power • USA builds Panama Canal

  24. Review • India is the most wealthy colony of Britain • Britain and Russia fight “the Great Game” for Afghanistan • French, Dutch, and British continue to profit from lands in SE Asia. • USA wins territory in Pacific after the Spanish-American War. • USA annexes Hawaii.
