Industry Participation Initiative - Objectives • Better engage industrial members • Increase industry membership • Increase membership value • Provide better communications between industrial and academic members • Academics to understand industrial issues • Industrialists to comprehend latest analytical methods • 1+1=3

  3. The Problem for Industrial Members • Papers/Sessions focus too much on the theoretical or too little on the applied • “Take away” at conferences makes justification to senior management difficult • Industrial members cannot get approval to publish cutting end research or believe papers are not worthy of presentation without extensive math representation • Industrial members are in the minority

  4. Thoughts to increase benefits for industrial members • Have industrials sessions run in parallel with academic sessions • Allow PELS Magazine to cater to industrial type papers • Let source of papers for PELS Magazine be that presented at industrial sessions • Add round table group discussions • Expanded industrial membership at conferences will increase exhibition sales!

  5. What needs to change • Review process for industrial papers needs to be changed • Make space for industrial sessions at conferences • Give industrial members a better “take away” at conferences • More applied papers needs to be published I do not believe just doing one of the above will be enough to make a change

  6. Conclusion • Is what we have now broken? • We enhance our conferences, paper review processes, and magazine to better accommodate industrial members? • Increasing interest with industrial members will increasing PEL’s membership • Your thoughts?
