The Role The Designated Person is responsible for all looked after children and care leavers in the College, providing advice, guidance, support and advocacy pre-entry, during enrolment and throughout the young person’s time in College.
The Role Responsible for the operation of the protocol between the College and the Neath Port Talbot CBC 16+ Looked After Children and Leaving Care Service (Route 16)
The aim of the protocol is to ensure continuity in the planning and provision of the most appropriate educational, training, careers and support services that meet the needs of looked after children and care leavers during their transition through further and higher education. The Role
establish mechanisms to identify all looked after children and care leavers entering College or already on programme effectively target this group of young people prior to the start of the academic year and encourage access to FE for people from care identify and meet the individual support needs of this particular group of learners The Role
identify and help remove any financial barriers to studying by ensuring that all sources of financial support and commitment for the learner are in place through working with the local authority and appropriate partners provide an accessible main point of contact and dedicated support and advocacy for the young people, their social workers and young peoples advisers and carers prior to entry and on programme The Role
The Role develop effective links with local authorities, schools and other partner agencies in order to make information available to support the transition to FE provide support through the application and enrolment process raise awareness of the support needs of looked after children and care leavers across the College and at all levels
The Role effectively track the recruitment, retention, attainment and progression of looked after children and care leavers
In 2010 the College received the Buttle UK Quality Mark, which is awarded to further and higher education providers who demonstrate their commitment to young people in and leaving care.
For raising the quality of support for looked after children and care leavers in 2012 the College received the Association of Colleges Beacon Award sponsored by the Welsh Government for Engaging Learners who are not in Education, Employment or Training.
Other Responsibilities The main link for other vulnerable target groups within the College (including young carers, potential NEETS, independent young people) To facilitate effective transition procedures to college for vulnerable groups including support with financial assistance as appropriate and enrolment without fees arranging for invoicing at a later date as appropriate
