  1. TYPES OF CARE AND SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR LOOKED AFTER CHILDREN. Bethany Hanson.

  2. FOSTER CARE • Foster Care: Placing a child in the temporary care of a family other than its own as the result of problems or challenges that are taking place within the birth family, or while critical elements of an adoption are being completed. • Foster Children: These children will generally remain in foster care until they are reunited with their parents, or until their parents voluntarily consent to their adoption by another family, or until the court involuntarily terminates or severs the parental right of their biological parents, so that they can become available to be adopted by another family.

  3. ADOPTION • Adoption: The official transfer through the court system of all of the parental rights that a biological parent has to a child, to the adoptive parents, including the responsibility for the care and supervision of the child, its nurturing and training, its physical and emotional health, and its financial support.

  4. RESIDENTIAL CARE • Residential Care Facility: A structured 24-hour care facility with highly-trained staff that provide psychological services to help severely troubled children overcome behavioural, emotional, mental, or psychological problems that have had an adverse affect on their family interactions and relationships, their school achievement, and their peer group relationships and socialization.

  5. RESPITE CARE • Respite Care: Temporary or short-term home care of a child that is provided, either for pay or on a voluntary basis, by adults other than the birthparents, foster parents, or adoptive parents that the child normally resides with, which is designed to give the parents some time away from the child, and even the child some time away from the parents, to allow them to emotionally recharge and become better prepared to handle the normal day-to-day challenges of parenting.
